New Mohamed Salah Rumors Reveal Surprise Landing Spot After Egypt's 2026 World Cup Exit
With Egypt out of the World Cup, all eyes shift to Mohamed Salah and where he'll play next.
According to The Athletic's Tom Bogert, Sporting KC has emerged as Salah's top suitor should he make the move to the MLS. Bogert added, however, that Salah still prefers to play in Europe and has garnered Saudi interest as well.
Sporting KC's owner Peter Mallouk addressed the rumors, saying the team "will be significantly better in the second half" even if the club doesn't land Salah:
Salah has spent the last 10 years with Liverpool, but announced in March that he planned to leave the club. He had previously voiced his frustrations with the team, saying that Liverpool had broken promises made when he signed his contract. He added that his relationship with now-fired manager Arne Slot had gone south.
"The club promised me in the summer a lot of promises, and nothing," he said in December. "So far, I'm on the bench three games. So I can't say that they keep their promises. I said it many times; I had a good relationship with the manager, and all of the sudden, we don't have any relationship. I don't know why."
According to Bogert, several MLS clubs have registered interest in Salah, but Sporting remains the frontrunner. The team's new owner, Peter Mallouk, is the son of Egyptian immigrants.
Still, Salah joining any team in MLS is "viewed as a long shot due to the Saudi Pro League's heavy interest."
The interest from Sporting KC comes as the club eyes a handful of big-name players. Bogert noted that the club is working on potential deals with Toulouse winger Yann Gboho and Olympiacos winger Andre Luiz. Both deals would carry a fee in the range of $18-20 million, according to Bogert.
Salah, 34, is coming off a rough season in which he finished with just seven goals and seven assists across 2,150 minutes in the Premier League. Still, he's just a year removed from one of his best seasons, and he'll look to return to form in either Kansas City or elsewhere.
