"Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell," he said. "I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. ... I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the teammates past and present. And to the fans, I don't have enough words. The support you have showed me through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times. It's something I will never forget. And something I will take with me always. Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life."

This brings a definitive conclusion to more than a year's worth of drama surrounding Salah's future at Anfield.

A running subplot throughout Liverpool's Premier League title-winning campaign was whether Salah would stick around. His new contract wasn't confirmed until mid-April.

While he re-signed for two years, a summer split was probably inevitable the moment Salah gave his explosive interview to reporters after Liverpool's 3-3 draw with Leeds United on Dec. 6.

The 33-year-old remained on the bench for the entire match. In the mixed zone, he vented his frustration about feeling like a scapegoat, broken promises made when he signed his contract, and a breakdown in his relationship with manager Arne Slot.

While Salah eventually reclaimed his usual spot in the squad, both his and the club's performance haven't improved. Through 22 PL appearances, he has five goals and six assists, while Liverpool sits fifth in the league table.

Salah might be the single greatest player for the club since Kenny Dalglish. Only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt have scored more goals, and the Egyptian King was a key figure in two Premier League titles and the 2018-19 Champions League triumph.

As significant a figure as Salah is for Liverpool, the time has come for both parties to move on.

It's unclear where the decorated winger will play next. Saudi Arabia is the most logical guess. A summer transfer provides him with an opportunity to secure one more big contract, one surpassing what he's currently earning at Anfield.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will no longer have the challenge of phasing out an aging star who's no longer at his best. The club also knows well in advance of the summer transfer window opening that it needs a suitable Salah replacement.

The Reds are still alive in the Champions League and are fighting to secure qualification for next year's competition. That provides plenty of stakes for their remaining fixtures. Supporters will also spend the next two months ensuring Salah has a proper sendoff.
