Philadelphia Phillies' 2026 MLB Draft Top Picks and Top 10 Prospects
The Philadelphia Phillies' top selection in the 2026 MLB draft was California high school shortstop Tyler Spangler with the No. 36 overall pick.
So where does he slot into the bigger farm system picture?
With Justin Crawford and Andrew Painter both exhausting their prospect status after breaking camp on the Opening Day roster, there are some fresh faces joining Aidan Miller and 2025 first-round pick Gage Wood at the top of the Philadelphia farm system.
Let's unpack how all the Day 1 action unfolded for the Phillies, and how it changes the look of their system.

Day 1 Draft Results
1st round, No. 36 overall: SS Tyler Spangler, De La Salle HS (CA)
2nd round, No. 64 overall: OF Caden Bogenpohl, Missouri State
3rd round, No. 100 overall: RHP Ruger Riojas, Texas
4th round, No. 128 overall: RHP Deven Sheerin, LSU
4th round, No. 135 overall: RHP Jaxon Jelkin, Kentucky
Tyler Spangler entered the spring as part of the top tier of prep shortstops and a candidate to go inside the top 15 picks following a terrific summer on the showcase circuit, but a back injury kept him sidelined for most of his senior season.
He did return for the Draft Combine, and the Phillies saw enough to pull the trigger with their top pick. He has a smooth left-handed swing, significant projection in his 6'3" frame and a solid all-around offensive profile with a chance to stay at shortstop and enough power upside to handle a move to third base.
They followed that selection by adding arguably the best raw power in the entire draft in Caden Bogenpohl. The 6'6", 245-pound masher only hit six home runs this spring, but he registers some of the highest batted-ball metrics in the class and puts on a show in batting practice.

Crown Jewel: A 19-strikeout, no-hitter against Murray State at the 2025 College World Series vaulted Gage Wood into the first round of the 2025 draft, as he ultimately went No. 26 overall. The Arkansas product is moving quickly through the minors, with a 3.44 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 55 innings between Single-A and Double-A.
System Weakness: Considering that Brandon Marsh was originally drafted by the Angels, it's been a long time since the Phillies had a true homegrown star emerge from their farm system. Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott are solid everyday players, but with an aging core of stars, they need another wave of impact talent to build around for the future.
Second-Half Outlook: Given the speed at which he is moving through the minors, Gage Wood could position himself for a late-season call-up if the Phillies are looking to bolster their playoff push. He pitched primarily out of the bullpen as a freshman and sophomore at Arkansas, and his fastball-curveball would play up in shorter stints.
