Ketel Marte Casino Photos, Video Addressed by Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo
On the heels of not showing up to Fenway Park for Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox and subsequently being placed on the injured list, Ketel Marte became a topic of conversation again on Friday night when he was spotted at a casino while the Arizona Diamondbacks were playing.
After a 9-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters he wasn't aware of Marte's whereabouts, then explained that he was "free to do whatever he wants" as long as he is doing the required rehab work while on the IL.
Videos and images were posted on social media showing Marte at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale.
Salt River Fields is the spring training home to the Diamondbacks and where injured D-Backs rehab during the season. It's located three miles from Talking Stick Resort.
Marte was initially placed on the restricted list for not showing up to Monday's game.
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reported late Monday after the game was over that Marte was flying back to Arizona to undergo an MRI on his knee.
Marte was moved to the IL on Thursday after a meeting with him, his agent, Lovullo and D-Backs general manager Mike Hazen.
Details of the meeting were not made public beyond Hazen calling it "productive."
Speaking to reporters prior to Friday's game against the Reds, Lovullo admitted he felt "betrayed" when asked to describe his reaction to Marte's initial absence.
"Once I saw what was unfolding, I became extremely frustrated. I felt betrayed," Lovullo said. "And that's a whole different type of pain and frustration. But I'm through that."
Lovullo didn't have a definite answer when asked what he thought caused Marte to no-show, though he did suggest there was "maybe a little bit of frustration" from his knee injury and "a few things that I want to keep personal" they were trying to work through with him.
Despite missing games earlier in the season due to a back issue, Marte avoided an IL stint until this week. He is in the midst of his worst season since 2022 with a .249/.314/.446 slash line and 21 homers in 118 games.
Marte made the All-Star team in each of the previous two years and finished third in NL MVP voting in 2024.
Arizona (68-61) is one game behind the San Diego Padres in the race for the No. 3 wild card spot in the NL.
