Torey Lovullo Felt 'Betrayed' After Ketel Marte's Absence, Talks Relationship with D-Backs Star
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he felt "betrayed" when second baseman Ketel Marte did not show up to a Monday game at the Boston Red Sox.
"Once I saw what was unfolding, I became extremely frustrated. I felt betrayed," Lovullo told reporters Friday about his reaction to Marte's absence. "And that's a whole different type of pain and frustration. But I'm through that."
When asked what caused Marte's no-show, Lovullo said he thought there was "maybe a little bit of frustration" built around his left knee injury.

"I think he got tired, he got frustrated by a few things that I want to keep personal, and we're going to work through that," Lovullo said.
The Diamondbacks originally announced Monday that Marte had been placed on the restricted list before the road game against the Red Sox.
MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reported the move was made because Marte had not arrived despite the Diamondbacks hoping "up until close to game time" he would be there.
The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro reported the following day Marte was returning to Arizona in order to undergo an MRI on his knee.
Marte and his agent met Thursday about the incident with Lovullo and Arizona general manager Mike Hazen, per Gilbert.
Both Hazen and Lovullo said afterward they felt the conversation was "productive."
"We covered a lot of ground. We were able to say things that we needed to say to one another, and we are going to turn the page as quickly as possible and get Ketel back in a healthy frame of mind from a physical standpoint," Lovullo said.
Lovullo concluded, "I think the conclusion that was drawn up yesterday is that we could have been better, and Ketel could have been better, specifically, and admittedly so."
Lovullo added of his relationship with Marte: "I love Ketel Marte — my relationship with him is not going to change."
Marte will begin rehabbing in Scottsdale starting Friday. Lovullo said the Diamondbacks are hoping to get him back by the time he's eligible to return from the 10-day injured list as the Diamondbacks continue fighting for an NL Wild Card spot down the stretch.
