Giannis, Heat Contract Extension Options Revealed After Trade from Bucks Amid 2026 NBA Free Agency
Now that Giannis Antetokounmpo's trade to the Miami Heat is official, the two sides can begin extension negotiations in earnest.
ESPN's Bobby Marks laid out the possible pathways for a max deal:
Nothing is assured until the ink is dry on the contract, but one presumes the Heat made the trade while getting some unofficial confirmation that Giannis will re-sign at some point down the road.
Otherwise, the move would risk being a disaster. Miami sacrificed serious depth and draft capital in order to land the two-time NBA MVP, so the cupboard would suddenly become very bare if he were exit next summer.
The hard truth is that president Pat Riley and general manager Andy Elisburg may need a full year to get the roster to where it needs to be in order to contend for a title.
Especially with Norman Powell heading to the Chicago Bulls, the Heat are seriously lacking in shooting. They'd benefit from getting a playmaking upgrade over Davion Mitchell. Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo aren't a seamless fit in the frontcourt, either, and that could require adjustments elsewhere.
Adding another guard and perimeter shooters would be hard enough if Miami had cap space. It doesn't.
The Heat will have more flexibility in 2027 along with the knowledge of how to complement Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. As much as they want to win now, they're probably realistic about having better title odds in another year or two.
Tying Giannis down would remove any doubt about his commitment to the organization and be a sign to prospective targets that he's sticking around for the foreseeable future.
