Celtics' Updated Roster, Salary Cap After Mitchell Robinson's Reported Contract in NBA Free Agency
The Boston Celtics and free agent center Mitchell Robinson have agreed to a three-year, $47.4 million deal, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
Here's a look at the Celtics' updated roster and depth chart (per ESPN) and salary cap (per ESPN's Bobby Marks).
At this time, it's unclear if Robinson or last year's starting center, Neemias Queta, would start in 2026-27. However, both figure to absorb a lot of playing time at the 5.
Roster and Depth Chart
PG: Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, Mike Conley Jr., Dalano Banton
SG: Jaylen Brown, Baylor Scheierman, Hugo Gonzalez
SF: Sam Hauser, Baylor Scheierman, Ron Harper Jr.
PF: Jayson Tatum, Jordan Walsh, Chris Cenac Jr.
C: Mitchell Robinson, Neemias Queta, Luka Garza
Salary Cap Situation
Per Marks, the Celtics' projected payroll for 2026-27 is at $204 million, or just $5 million below the first apron.
Robinson has played all eight of his NBA seasons for the New York Knicks, who selected him with the 36th overall pick in the 2018 draft. He's a tremendous defender, shot blocker and rebounder, and those traits all helped the 2025-26 Knicks en route to their first NBA title in 53 years.
Now Robinson is headed to Boston, which will greatly benefit from Robinson's presence down low.
The Celtics have some big questions looming this offseason, namely the status of Jaylen Brown. Boston has been looking to trade him (the feeling is seemingly mutual) and wants four first-round picks in return, per Sam Amick of The Athletic.
Boston could also give Queta, whose option has been picked up for the 2026-27 season, an extension, as noted by Keith Smith of Spotrac.
However, adding Robinson gives the Celtics some needed depth and help down low as the 56-win team looks to bounce back from a tough first-round playoff exit.
