Everything Rich Paul Said About LeBron James Conversations Prior to Lakers Exit in NBA Free Agency
In the wake of LeBron James announcing he will not be returning to the Los Angeles Lakers, his agent has shed more light on the process that led to this decision.
On the latest episode of the Game Over podcast, Rich Paul explained James' desire to remain with the Lakers continued to go down as the offseason moved along and he didn't want his decision to only be about maximizing his financial earnings on his next contract.
Paul also explained that even though the Lakers made it clear they wanted James to return, they decided not to formally meet with team officials to avoid wasting everyone's time once James decided not to remain in Los Angeles.
As far as what's next for James, Paul joked that market size doesn't matter as much as there being access to "indoor and outdoor golf" around for him.
With it being certain that James will be finding a new team for the 2026-27 season, speculation so far has largely centered around the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are also believed to have interest, though it's unclear if James would strongly consider them.
Golden State seems to be planning for a run at James. Draymond Green opted out of his $27.7 million salary for next season to give the Warriors more financial flexibility.
The Heat and Cavs are even more limited financially than the Warriors. Miami has just $11.5 million available before getting to the first apron with up to four roster spots left to fill.
Cleveland has been working to get under the second apron and clear money to potentially entice James. Dean Wade left the Cavs to join the Philadelphia 76ers. Max Strus and Dennis Schroder have been mentioned as potential trade candidates.
James is coming off a strong 2025-26 season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game in 60 starts to help the Lakers secure the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference.
The 41-year-old will end his Lakers tenure having won one NBA championship and earned seven All-NBA team selections in eight seasons.
