LeBron James to Leave Lakers, New NBA Rumors on Future Amid Warriors, Landing Spot Buzz

Joseph ZuckerJun 30, 2026

The NBA's ruling monarch isn't calling it quits just yet.

And while we don't know where LeBron James will be playing, we know for sure where he won't be playing after the Lakers confirmed he will be moving on.

ESPN's Shams Charania first reported James intended to continue his NBA career outside of Los Angeles as reports began to emerge about his potential landing spot:

Last summer, the surefire Hall of Famer found himself in a situation he had never experienced before.

Paul told Charania that James was triggering his player option but at the same time would "be closely monitoring the Lakers' moves and whether the team is positioning itself this offseason to field a title-contending roster."

That wasn't an outright trade request, but many read it as applying pressure to Los Angeles' front office and displaying a willingness to explore outside opportunities.

The reality of the situation quickly became clear, however. There simply wasn't a robust market for James given his age, salary and no-trade clause.

The most realistic landing spots didn't have the space or assets to complete a trade with the Lakers, and the teams that could've feasibly pulled it off were probably far down his wish list.

As a result, James stayed with Los Angeles and the outcome was basically what everyone expected.

LeBron averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in the regular season. His efforts in the first round against the Houston Rockets were reminiscent of his younger years when he put the Cleveland Cavaliers on his back.

But having James and Luka Dončić for a full season didn't change much for the Lakers. They once again won 50-plus games before hitting their ceiling in the postseason. Even if Dončić had been on the floor, they wouldn't have had enough to match the depth of the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

That raised the possibility that James would actually leave Los Angeles, something he resisted in the past when the franchise was in a similar predicament with he and Anthony Davis.

The fact he's no longer the most important player on the roster, a distinction that belongs to Dončić, was another consideration in all of this. The Athletic's Dan Woike and Sam Amick reported in May that general manage Rob Pelinka was understandably focused on building the supporting cast around Luka and his skill set.

When it came to his future, exiting or staying on the Lakers looked equally plausible for James.

The 41-year-old still has a lot left in the tank as a player, and he adjusted his style to play off the ball a little more in 2025-26. His 27.2 percent usage rate was a career low, per Basketball Reference.

But James has checked off everything he could ever hope to achieve multiple times over. There wasn't that one clear thing that would draw him back in like he had with son Bronny James entering the NBA or knowing he'd get to team up with Dončić in pursuit of a fifth championship.

Woike and Amick have also downplayed LeBron's desire to have a full-fledged farewell tour like some other legends have enjoyed.

Whatever his motivations are, James decided he still has some unfinished business.
