Predicting When Top Picks of 2026 MLB Mock Drafts Make Their Big League Debuts
The MLB draft differs from its NBA and NFL counterparts in that draft picks rarely make an immediate impact at the highest level, instead spending multiple years in the minor leagues developing their game.
Even in the case of a generational talent like Paul Skenes who was the No. 1 pick in his draft class, he still spent time in the minors before debuting the year after he was selected.
With the 2026 MLB draft fast approaching, we've taken a closer look at the top 10 prospects in this year's draft class and projected when each will reach the big leagues.
Included is a look at where each player was slotted in Bleacher Report's latest mock draft for further context on how the start of the draft might play out.
SS Tyler Bell, Kentucky
1 of 10
B/R Mock: No. 9 overall (ATL)
After going No. 66 overall in the 2024 draft, Tyler Bell raised his stock after two seasons at the University of Kentucky, though he battled a shoulder injury throughout the spring.
His exit velocity numbers started to tick up during conference play as he got further away from the injury that was suffered on Opening Day, and he ended up hitting .343/.510/.608 with 19 extra-base hits in 41 games.
He doesn't have the same long-term ceiling as Roch Cholowsky or some of the top prep shortstops, but his polished offensive game and standout defensive tools give him an extremely high floor. The big question is whether the injury to his non-throwing shoulder will require any clean-up surgery.
ETA: mid-2028
OF Eric Booth Jr., Oak Grove HS (MS)
2 of 10B/R Mock: No. 6 overall (KC)
Eric Booth Jr. has the least polished profile of anyone projected to go inside the top 10 in the 2026 draft, but he also has perhaps the highest overall ceiling if everything clicks into place with his development.
With top-of-the-scale speed, a 55-grade hit tool and potential 20-homer power down the road, he checks a lot of boxes to be an impact two-way center fielder at the next level.
Refining his approach at the plate, smoothing out his swing path and developing his reads defensively and on the bases rather than just relying on his top-flight speed are all items on his developmental to-do list, so he will need some seasoning in the minors.
ETA: mid-2030
OF Drew Burress, Georgia Tech
3 of 10
B/R Mock: No. 7 overall (BAL)
In 179 games over three seasons at Georgia Tech, Drew Burress hit .357/.484/.720 with 60 doubles, 60 home runs and 189 RBI, making an impact from the moment he stepped foot onto campus.
He should be able to stick in center field long-term, though his power potential and arm strength would also be a clean fit in right field, and that defensive versatility helps create a more clear path to the majors.
His 55-hit, 60-power offensive profile and an advanced approach that saw him tally more walks (49) than strikeouts (43) this spring could make him one of the first hitters from the 2026 class to find an everyday role in the big leagues.
ETA: mid-2028
SS Roch Cholowsky, UCLA
4 of 10
B/R Mock: No. 3 overall (MIN)
While a good-not-great performance during conference play this spring has closed the gap between Roch Cholowsky and the field, he remains the best all-around prospect in the 2026 draft class.
He hit .320/.452/.636 with 21 home runs in 60 games this spring, and his 60-grade power and polished defensive game at shortstop make him the safest bet in the class to be a multi-time All-Star at the next level.
Expect to see him debut at High-A after signing, which would put him on track to open the 2027 season at Double-A. That's the trajectory 2025 draft picks Aiva Arquette and Marek Houston are on, and if he looks the part in the upper minors, there's no reason he can't break camp with a starting job in 2028.
ETA: 2028 Opening Day
OF Derek Curiel, LSU
5 of 10
B/R Mock: No. 10 overall (COL)
After playing a key role on LSU's 2025 national championship team as a true freshman, Derek Curiel cemented his status as one of the most polished, high-floor prospects in the 2026 class.
He hit .349/.452/.522 with 55 extra-base hits and 131 runs scored in 126 games over two seasons, and the draft-eligible sophomore further elevates his profile with strong defensive tools in center field.
His 60-grade hit tool is his ticket to moving quickly through the minors, though potential swing tweaks to better tap into his power potential could mean a bit longer development time.
ETA: late-2028
SS Grady Emerson, Fort Worth Christian School (TX)
6 of 10B/R Mock: No. 1 overall (CWS)
Grady Emerson is arguably the best all-around high school shortstop prospect since Bobby Witt Jr. was taken No. 2 overall in the 2019 draft, offering a rare combination of five-tool upside and overall polish.
He is a lock to stick at shortstop with some of the best defensive tools in the class, while his 60-hit, 55-power offensive profile offers middle-of-the-order potential as he grows into his 6'3", 185-pound frame.
Konnor Griffin flew through the minors as a prep shortstop to make his MLB debut less than two years after he was taken No. 9 overall in the 2024 draft, and Emerson is a more advanced prospect at this stage in his career.
ETA: Opening Day 2029
RHP Jackson Flora, UC Santa Barbara
7 of 10
B/R Mock: No. 4 overall (SF)
After an inconsistent spring from Florida's Liam Peterson and an injury-plagued season from Coastal Carolina's Cameron Flukey, the only pitcher who is a lock to go inside the top 10 picks is Jackson Flora.
The 6'5", 205-pound right-hander was virtually untouchable this spring, going 12-0 with a 1.06 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 133 strikeouts in 102 innings.
With three quality pitches and plus command, he is close to a finished product, and there's a very real chance he will be the first pitcher from the 2026 class to reach the big leagues.
ETA: late-2027
C Ryder Helfrick, Arkansas
8 of 10
B/R Mock: No. 8 overall (ATH)
Ryder Helfrick does not have the same star-level upside as Georgia Tech catcher Vahn Lackey, but he is the best defensive catcher in the 2026 draft class and that should help him race through the minors.
He has a profile similar to Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers at the same point in his development, with advanced defensive tools and playable power, making his hit tool the one question mark as he jumps from college competition to pro ball.
The timetable here will largely depend on where he lands in the draft, as an organization with a clear need behind the plate could put him on the fast track, while a team with a controllable starter in the majors might take a more conservative approach.
ETA: late-2028
C Vahn Lackey, Georgia Tech
9 of 10
B/R Mock: No. 2 overall (TB)
Vahn Lackey went from top catcher in the 2026 draft class to bona fide top-tier prospect with a huge junior season at Georgia Tech, hitting .397/.519/.772 with 16 doubles, 20 home runs, 78 RBI and 15 steals.
He is a rare athlete for the catcher position who actually saw some time at third base in 2025, and while his defensive game is still developing, the tools are there for him to be a plus backstop.
His value is considerably higher if he stays behind the plate, though putting his bat on the fast track with a move out of the crouch is also an option. Assuming he stays at catcher, he'll likely be beat to the big leagues by Ryder Helfrick, but the end result could be a franchise catcher and perennial All-Star.
ETA: early-2029
SS Jacob Lombard, Gulliver Prep (FL)
10 of 10B/R Mock: No. 5 overall (PIT)
Jacob Lombard is a tick behind Grady Emerson in terms of polish at the top of the high school shortstop demographic, but he might end up with the higher offensive ceiling thanks to his 60-grade power and projectable 6'3", 195-pound frame.
Teams have been more willing to push top-tier prep talent in recent years if they perform well in the lower levels of the minors, though his bat-to-ball skills might need some refinement after he showed more swing-and-miss than ideal on the showcase circuit last summer.
Shortstops with plus power, speed and defensive actions don't grow on trees, but he will have a longer developmental runway than anyone outside of Eric Booth Jr. among the draft's top 10 talents.
ETA: 2030
