New NBA Trade Rumors on Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington amid Mavs Buzz

Adam WellsJun 13, 2026

Now that Masai Ujiri is entrenched as the new team president for the Dallas Mavericks, many veteran players on the roster are expected to be available in trade talks this summer.

Per NBA insider Marc Stein, Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington are viewed as the players Dallas is "most open" to dealing.

Stein cited Thompson as generating "particular notice" from opposing teams since he will be playing next season on a $17.5 million expiring salary.

This comes on the heels of Stein reporting that Kyrie Irving has drawn interest from multiple teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons.

Since finishing 26-56 this season, the Mavs have spent the past two months completely transforming their basketball operations department. Ujiri was hired on May 4 and given complete authority to set the direction for the franchise.

The first major decision of Ujiri's tenure was a parting of ways with head coach Jason Kidd on May 19 amid rumors of a potential power struggle between the two because Kidd had previously expressed a desire to be named president of basketball operations.

Given that Ujiri's introductory press conference was heavily focused on wanting to continue taking necessary steps to build around Cooper Flagg, the idea of trading expensive veteran players brought in by the previous regime makes sense.

Washington and Gafford both have contract extensions that won't kick in until the start of the 2026-27 season. Washington is owed $88.8 million over the next four years. Gafford will make $54.4 million over the next three seasons.

Thompson's expiring salary and three-point shooting should make him easier to deal. The 36-year-old averaged 11.7 points on 38.3 percent three-point shooting in 69 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign.

The Mavs' 26 wins were their fewest in a single season since 2017-18 when they finished 24-58.
