Manchester United Transfer News: Fresh Harry Kane Approach Reignites Rumours

A tame display against Tottenham on Saturday has led Manchester United back to the doorstep of White Hart Lane amid fresh reports Harry Kane tops the Red Devils' summer shortlist.

Louis van Gaal's side won their Premier League opener 1-0 thanks to a Kyle Walker own goal, after which John Cross of the Mirror reports "discreet enquiries" have been made as to Kane's availability.

United looked short of ideas in attack and captain Wayne Rooney was fortunate to see Walker prod past Michel Vorm to clinch a fortunate win. Van Gaal has room for arrivals following the departures of Radamel Falcao—who spent last season on loan at Old Trafford—and Robin van Persie, now at Fenerbahce. 

The United manager has maintained investment will only be made in players he feels are superior to those already at the club, per the Daily Mail's Chris Wheeler:

"We go for the best players and it has to be possible. When we can buy another striker who has a lot of qualities more than our players then we buy, but we have done that always," Van Gaal said.

Kane had his chances to make the difference at Old Trafford and finished with the joint-highest amount of shots on goal (three) along with Christian Eriksen, Memphis Depay and Juan Mata, per WhoScored.

The England front man encouraged mixed reviews in his first game of the season as the Guardian's Michael Cox hailed his relationship with playmaker Eriksen, while Goal's Jay Jaffa lambasted wasted opportunities in front of goal:

After netting 31 goals in all competitions last season, the Tottenham forward faces a fight to live up to his own expectations this time around, having also made his way into Roy Hodgson's England setup.

Van Gaal would have the 22-year-old provide competition alongside Three Lions team-mate Rooney, but Kane has told BT Sport of his desire to fire Spurs back into the Premier League's top four:

Winger Memphis Depay was deployed largely as a central attacking figure during his last campaign at PSV, finishing the 2014-15 season as the Eredivisie's top scorer with 22 league goals in 30 appearances.

As pointed out by FourFourTwo's Elko Born, Saturday's Old Trafford debut was hardly the Dutchman's most impressive display, but he requires time to acclimate after undergoing a massive shift in setting this summer:

Many might see club-captain Rooney as the man to lead Van Gaal's line as a lone striker this season, the position he's sought for so long after being forced to take up deeper roles in recent seasons for the team's benefit.

But with Falcao and Van Persie now departed, while Javier Hernandez sits as a fringe figure in the squad, this season may finally bring about Rooney's best chance of returning to his roots as an out-and-out forward.

Kane would assuredly benefit from studying under his England compatriot, but the promise for guaranteed minutes at White Hart Lane may be too precious to sacrifice at this point.

Cross' report insists "any encouragement" would be sufficient in encouraging United to make their move, but Spurs are sure to fight hard in retaining such a vital piece of their Premier League puzzle.
