Pat White's No. 5 Jersey to Be Retired by WVU, Mountaineers Honor QB With Highlight Video
West Virginia football legend Pat White will have his No. 5 jersey retired by the school.
The university announced on Friday that White's number will join the ranks of the immortals in Mountaineers history.
An official date for the retirement ceremony hasn't been set, but a statement from athletic director Wren Baker confirmed it will happen this year at a fall home game:
"Pat White was a generational player for West Virginia football and led our program through perhaps the greatest era in our history. Everywhere I go, I hear stories about the way Pat elevated our program and his teammates to greatness. There is no question Pat deserves this ultimate honor. His legacy and success have been documented and appreciated by his teammates, national media and college football fans all over the world. It has also been a privilege to watch him continue to pour himself into our program while serving on our coaching staff. Pat White is a special person and one of the greatest Mountaineers of all time."
White played four seasons at West Virginia from 2005 to '08. He was the starting quarterback for each of his final three years, presiding over one of the most successful periods for the football team in program history.
The Mountaineers went 29-8 from 2006 to '08, winning 11 games in each of the first two seasons. In 2007, they won the Big East championship and defeated Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
White also finished in the top 10 of Heisman voting in 2007 and 2008. His sixth-place finish in '07 was the best for a West Virginia quarterback since Major Harris finished third in 1989.
It remains the fourth-best Heisman result for a Mountaineers quarterback, behind two Harris seasons (1988-89) and Will Grier in 2018 (fourth).
White ranks sixth in school history in passing yards (6,049), fourth in passing touchdowns (56) and second in rushing yards (4,480) and rushing touchdowns (47).
West Virginia has seven home games scheduled for the 2026 season. Opponents include Coastal Carolina in the opener on Sept. 5, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Cincinnati, Kansas and Houston.
White will become the seventh player in Mountaineers history to have his jersey retired. He joins a group that includes Harris, Ira Rodgers, Chuck Howley, Sam Huff, Bruce Bosley and Darryl Talley.
