Brock Lesnar Called Out by Gunther, Latest WWE and AEW Rumors on Enzo, Big Cass & FTR Contracts
Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.
Gunther Open to Lesnar Match After Clash in Italy
Gunther vs. Brock Lesnar is a dream match WWE fans have long talked about, and The Ring General suggested this week that he is open to making it happen.
During an appearance on Italian Wrestling Channel (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News), Gunther said his "full focus" is on his WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes this weekend at Clash in Italy before adding, "After I beat Cody, then Brock can challenge me, and we'll do that."
Both Gunther and Lesnar are scheduled for huge matches at Clash in Italy. Gunther will open the show in a WWE title match against Rhodes, while Lesnar is getting his rematch with Oba Femi after losing at WrestleMania 42.
Lesnar removed his gloves and boots after the loss to Femi, leaving many to believe he was retiring.
However, he made his surprise return to WWE programming a couple of weeks ago by attacking Femi, thus setting the stage for their rematch.
That means an eventual Gunther vs. Lesnar match is still a possibility, and many have speculated that it could be a bout where Lesnar puts his career on the line.
Since last year, Gunther has beaten Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles in their final matches, and sending Lesnar into retirement would be another feather in his cap.
SummerSlam is taking place on Aug. 1 and 2 in Minneapolis, which is where Lesnar wrestled collegiately at the University of Minnesota.
If Lesnar intends on retiring soon and making SummerSlam the stage for his final match, it can be argued that there would be no more fitting opponent than Gunther.
Latest on Enzo and Cass' Potential WWE Future
Amid rumors of a potential Enzo Amore and Big Cass reunion in WWE, new information has emerged regarding Enzo.
According to Fightful Select (h/t WrestlePurists), some wrestling promoters have been told that Enzo is no longer taking the types of bookings that he typically would. Because of that, promoters are "operating under the assumption" that Enzo is going to sign with WWE.
Fightful added that previous reports of Big Cass or Big Bill's AEW contract expiring in late May or early June still appear to be accurate.
This comes on the heels of WrestleVotes on Fightful Select (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News) reporting last week that WWE has interest in bringing Enzo and Cass back into the fold as a team.
While no movement can occur on the Cass front until his AEW deal is up, recent reports suggest that Enzo has been back around WWE, as False Finish reported that he has been present at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, on multiple occasions.
Enzo and Cass first teamed up in NXT in 2013, and they quickly became one of the most popular acts on the brand thanks to their entertaining entrance.
They remained popular upon getting called up to the main roster in 2016, but the decision was made to break the team up about a year later, and both Enzo and Cass were released from the company in 2018.
Enzo has remained active on the independent scene, while Cass has enjoyed stints in TNA and AEW.
Their greatest success came as a team, though, and it will be interesting to see if lightning strikes twice should they both decide to return to WWE.
Reported Details on FTR's Contract, Upcoming Option Year
One of the most accomplished tag teams in wrestling today reportedly have a big decision looming regarding their contractual status.
According to BodySlam.net (h/t WrestlePurists), FTR are approaching an option year in the four-year contract they signed with AEW in 2023.
Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler are reportedly of the belief that they should be among the highest-paid performers in AEW, and they could have some leverage to help them reach that level.
WWE reportedly has "preliminary interest" in FTR, and the company has communicated that interest to FTR through mutual contacts, per BodySlam.net.
FTR wrestled in WWE as The Revival from 2014 to 2020, holding the Raw Tag Team Championships and NXT Tag Team Championships two times each, and the SmackDown Tag Team Championships once.
They signed with AEW in 2020 and have continued to add to their résumé, becoming three-time AEW world tag team champions, and one-time ROH, AAA and IWGP tag champs since then.
At Double or Nothing on Sunday, FTR dropped the AEW world tag team titles to Adam Copeland and Christian Cage in an acclaimed I Quit match.
Despite the loss, AEW still feels like the best fit for FTR given the company's emphasis on the tag team wrestling and the possibility of additional high-profile teams such as New Day and The Motor City Machine Guns joining the company in the coming months.
Even if WWE's interest is legitimate, it is difficult to envision the company outbidding AEW for FTR's services based on WWE's lack of commitment to tag team wrestling.
