There are mixed opinions of Schoen.
His decision to let Saquon Barkley walk in free agency ahead of the 2024 season remains controversial, especially after the star running back helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl title that season. On the other hand, the Giants were a rebuilding team who chose to allocate resources elsewhere, a defensible roster-building strategy.
Since Schoen took over as general manager, the Giants are just 22-45-1. But his rebuilding efforts have included some strong draft picks, including Abdul Carter, Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, Malik Nabers, Cor'Dale Flott, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Wan'Dale Robinson, among others. The jury is still out on the Class of 2026, including first-rounders Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa. There have also been some rough selections (Deonte Banks, Evan Neal, etc.).
Other major moves during his tenure have included acquiring pass-rusher Brian Burns, trading Dexter Lawrence this offseason to Cincinnati for the No. 10 overall pick and signing Tremaine Edmunds and Isaiah Likely this season, among others.
So... are the Giants better off now than when Schoen took over?
Arguably yes. They have an intriguing young core of players, led by Dart, and added head coach John Harbaugh this offseason. There is reason for optimism in New York.
