Thursday Highlights

No. 1 Georgia Tech 16, No. 8 Virginia 10

It looked like the No. 1 team in the tournament was in significant trouble when Virginia built a 9-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

And then that seventh inning happened.

Georgia Tech pushed seven runs across the plate in that frame before adding four more runs of insurance in the eighth. It was a dramatic turnaround that resulted in a 16-10 victory for the Yellow Jackets.

Parker Brosius launched a grand slam in the seventh as one of four long balls during those two innings. Carson Kerce, Vahn Lackey and Kent Schmidt hit the other ones during the offensive explosion.

Kerce and Lackey each launched two homers during the game.

In a normal game, 10 runs would have been enough to win for Virginia. Joe Tiroly, Harrison Didawick and Antonio Perrotta all hit home runs for the Cavaliers, but Georgia Tech's power proved too much to overcome.

No. 5 Miami 8, No. 4 Boston College 2

It seemed as if Boston College was setting the tone early in its quarterfinals game against Miami when it scored two runs in the opening inning.

And then the Hurricanes seized control the rest of the way.

Miami scored the game's final eight runs on the way to an 8-2 victory. The first four of those runs came during a second inning that included a two-run homer from Fabio Peralta, and Alex Sosa provided a cushion with a two-run long ball of his own in the fourth.

The offense added some more insurance runs as the game progressed, but the story was the Hurricanes pitching.

Starter Lazaro Collera settled in after the initial two runs and didn't give up another in five innings of work. From there, the bullpen pitched four scoreless innings while giving up just two hits.

It was the kind of pitching Miami will need in the next round against top-seeded Georgia Tech.
