LeBron Reveals Criteria for Next Contract If He Decides Not to Retire amid Lakers Rumors

Mike ChiariMay 21, 2026

If LeBron James returns for a 24th NBA season in 2026-27, a couple of major factors will influence his decision of which team to sign with in free agency.

Discussing his future Thursday on the Mind the Game podcast (beginning at the 14-minute mark), James listed winning and family as the guiding principles behind his next move:

"Winning is most important," James said. "Because you wanna be excited about going to work every day. You want to be excited about winning the day and being around a group of guys that feel the same way, and trying not to take steps backwards. ... Yeah, I'm not going anywhere where it's a start over at Year 24 or things of that nature. I'm done with that."

Regarding his family and how they will influence his decision, James added, "It's very important, 1A and 1B. Where do I feel comfortable with doing my career, but also my family. How do they feel about whatever decision I'm able to come up with and make? It's a joint decision as well. I give them the insight. Both my boys, my daughter and my wife."

LeBron made mention of getting to play alongside his son, Bronny James, over the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as his other son, Bryce James, playing collegiately at the University of Arizona next season.

While James acknowledged that the final decision will be his own, he intends to heavily account for his family's opinions as well.

The 41-year-old James has spent the past eight seasons with the Lakers, but since he will become a free agent at the end of the 2025-26 season, signing elsewhere and finishing his career with another team is a possibility.

While James has been the unquestioned go-to guy on essentially every team he has ever been on, things changed this season.

LeBron was clearly behind Luka Donฤiฤ‡ in the offensive pecking order, and he also averaged fewer points per game than Austin Reaves.

Although James' 20.9 points per game matched the lowest scoring average of his career, he still put up 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per contest and shot 51.5 percent from the field, proving he could still be a productive player at an age where most are long retired.

L.A. reached the playoffs as the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference, but Donฤiฤ‡ missed the entire playoff run and Reaves missed the first four games due to injury.

As a result, James had to step into a familiar spot as the No. 1 option, and he delivered by leading the Lakers in playoff scoring with 23.2 points per game and taking them to the second round where they were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

When fully healthy, the Lakers are a potential contender in the West, plus LeBron and his family have been together in L.A. for years, and being with the Lakers means getting to continue playing with Bronny.

All of those factors point toward a potential return to the Lakers, but other organizations figure to have plenty of interest in the NBA's all-time leading scorer as well.

Last week, Marc Steinย of The Stein Line named the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers as teams that could potentially be in on James, but he noted that they all face potential financial hurdles when it comes to signing LeBron.

The Warriors' and Clippers' viability as contenders can be debated, whereas the Cavs and Knicks feel like much more realistic contenders given that both are in the Eastern Conference Finals right now.

Joining one of them would require a big move across the country, but James is from Akron, Ohio, and had two stints with the Cavaliers already, so perhaps they could be the most sensible landing spot should LeBron choose to leave Los Angeles.
