Wednesday Highlights

No. 14 Pittsburgh 7, No. 6 Wake Forest 4

Timely hitting by Pittsburgh and sloppy defense by Wake Forest led to the Panthers scoring a 7-4 upset win to reach the ACC tournament quarterfinals.

Pitt jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning with all three runs coming without a ball leaving the infield. Carter Dierdorf scored on a fielder's choice, followed by Sebastian Pisacreta and Mason Ligenza both crossing the plate on two different wild pitches.

The Demon Deacons came back to tie things at three thanks to Dalton Wentz's two-run homer in the bottom of the third.

Pitt came back with single runs in the fifth and sixth, with the latter coming courtesy of a Trey Fenderson RBI double after he hit two homers on Tuesday against Louisville.

The Panthers pushed two more runs across in the seventh to increase the lead to 7-3.

After Drew Lafferty scattered three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings, Pitt's bullpen went to work in shutting down Wake Forest. Four relievers combined to allow just two hits over four innings.

Daniel McAuliff did the bulk of the work for the Panthers with 2.2 innings. Wake did have the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but McAuliff escaped the threat by getting Matt Conte to fly out to end the game.

A victory on Thursday over Florida State would send Pittsburgh to the ACC tournament semifinals for the first time since 2022.

No. 7 Virginia Tech 17, No. 10 Notre Dame 10

The bats were lively between Virginia Tech and Notre Dame.

Led by Ethan Ball's two home runs and Hudson Lutterman's four RBI, Virginia Tech put up 17 runs, beating Notre Dame by a touchdown.

Logan Eisenreich came on in relief but earned the win for the Hokies, giving up five hits in 4.2 innings but just one run, striking out six.

Notre Dame opened the game with four runs in the top of the first, but Virginia Tech had a pair of three-run innings and a pair of four-run innings in an offensive onslaught.

No. 8 Virginia 6, No. 16 Duke 4

Virginia advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4 victory over Duke in large part because of a dominant sixth inning.

The Cavaliers pushed four runs across in the frame with RBI singles from Harrison Didawick and Jake Weatherspoon as well as a two-RBI triple from Zach Jackson. Just for good measure, Weatherspoon added an insurance run with a solo homer in the eighth.

That proved important because the Blue Devils pushed two runs across in the ninth with a long ball from Tyler Albright, but they were unable to make up the deficit.

Henry Zatkowski earned the win by allowing just two runs and two hits and striking out four in six innings of work.

No. 5 Miami 11, No. 12 Stanford 2

Miami had no trouble dispatching Stanford with an 11-2 victory thanks to Alonzo Alvarez leading a balanced offensive attack.

All nine batters in the Hurricanes' lineup notched at least one hit, while Alvarez proved unstoppable as he went 4-for-5 with two home runs, three runs, two doubles and three RBI.

Dylan Dubovik and Vance Sheahan also scored multiple runs in the straightforward win.

Teddy Tokheim went deep for Stanford, but that was far from enough as Miami starting pitcher Rob Evans allowed just two earned runs and four hits while striking out six in seven innings of work.
