Ronda Rousey Reveals Injury Suffered Before Carano Win in New Video, 'I'm the F--king Best At This'
Ronda Rousey defeated Gina Carano in 17 seconds during Saturday's showdown despite dealing with an injury.
"I sprained my ankle or foot pretty bad two-and-a-half weeks ago," Rousey told reporters after the win (12:45 mark). "It just made me think of my first injury. As a kid, I broke my big toe in judo, and my mom made me run laps around the mat for the rest of the night. And she said, 'you don't know if you're going to get hurt on the most important day. You could get hurt the day of the Olympics or you could get hurt when it really matters. And you need to know that your body listens to you and not the other way around.'"
Rousey continued and explained she re-aggravated the injury at the open workout on Wednesday and "had to dig deep this week" leading up to the fight.
"I've basically have never had a fight where I wasn't injured in some way," she said. "… I never pull out of a fight because I always fight anyway. So that's just part of it. And when it happened, I'm like, 'this is part of it, and I'm the f--king best at this. I push through."
She certainly looked like the best at fighting through injuries Saturday.
While there was no shortage of hype for the battle between Rousey and Carano that marked a comeback to the sport for each, the former made quick work of the evening. She charged right at her opponent, took her to the ground and finished the fight in a matter of seconds thanks to an armbar submission.
Many expected Rousey to win, but the relative ease in which she handled a notable opponent was stunning.
And the fact she was battling an injury throughout the lead up to the event only added to the accomplishment.
There was a time in Rousey's career when it was expected she would win quickly. After all, she started 12-0 in her first 12 professional fights with 11 of the victories coming in the first round. That made her a household name and one of the faces of the sport, and Saturday's return felt like a more fitting end to her legendary career than her previous back-to-back losses in 2015 and 2016.
Yet the UFC Hall of Famer had to deal with an obstacle outside of Carano thanks to the injury.
Still, her comments made it clear she has trained to fight through such setbacks throughout her career, and Saturday was just the latest example of such a triumph.
