BS Meter on Latest New Day and Mick Foley to AEW Rumors, WWE's Next ESPN Star and More

Chris RolingMay 16, 2026

The Backlash PLE followed up on WrestleMania and has done more to stir up more drama on the pro wrestling rumor mill than quiet it.

Normally, this time of year sees the mill fall into a bit of a lull. There's an agreed-upon almost "offseason" while the storylines start to build toward the next big thing that's a while away.

Not this year, apparently.

John Cena came back with an announcement that fired up the mill, WWE made some shocking cuts and there are rumblings about big free agents and more celebrity involvement, to name a few items.

To help fans keep pace with the still-surging mill, let's throw some of the biggest rumors on the BS Meter, with 10 being the highest form of unbelievable buzz fans can safely dismiss.

New Day to AEW buzz

Monday Night RAW

The Rumor

The New Day are shockingly free agents and could be AEW-bound. According to Fightful Select (h/t Geno Mrosko of Cageside Seats), there are "major names" pushing for the promotion to sign Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods.

Reaction

Kingston and Woods are fan favorites and popular across all promotions for a reason. And it's not much of a shock to hear that the promotion that actually makes tag wrestling a priority will have some interest.

BS Meter: 1

It's the easiest rumor to buy all week. This is a good example of WWE trending in the wrong direction in a few ways. Pro wrestlers and pro wrestling fans just straight-up want to see them. AEW is the best spot.

Stephen A. Smith to WWE?

2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner

The Rumor

And in a sign of where things really stand right now, while AEW might grab New Day, WWE might add…Stephen A. Smith. According to Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t Mrosko), the dislike of Pat McAfee's recent showings hasn't slowed the desire to get Stephen A. involved.

Reaction

Hot take, perhaps, but Stephen A. might be better in the role than McAfee. He can work a crowd and play a character pretty well. And he's got the type of weight to, for example, turn down being inserted into the main event of WrestleMania at the last second in a way that doesn't make sense.

BS Meter: 1

All right, this is a pretty easy one to buy, too. It's very clear WWE and ESPN want as much cross-promotion as possible. Stephen A. is the best way to do it. Here's to simply hoping it is well thought out and done well this time.

Stephanie Vaquer return update

3 of 5
WrestleMania 42

The Rumor

Don't look now, but Stephanie Vaquer should be back soon. According to PW Insider (h/t Cain A. Knight of Cageside Seats), the former world champion could be back as soon as the next episode of Raw.

Reaction

Vaquer hasn't had a match since WrestleMania, where she lost the women's world title to Liv Morgan. That was an extremely short match on a night littered with more ads than wrestling. But buzz and evidence since points to her injury being part of the reason.

BS Meter: 1

Regardless of the reason, if there's buzz starting up now about a Vaquer return, there's probably some truth to it. Good thing, too: She's got some stuff to settle and plenty of interesting storylines to hop into as soon as possible.

Mick Foley joining AEW?

4 of 5
New York Comic Con 2022 - Day 2

The Rumor

Here's a shocker. According to Sports Illustrated's Jon Alba, Mick Foley will let his WWE Legends deal expire soon and that AEW has already put forth "real" interest in working with him.

Reaction

Many think of Foley as WWE only, understandably. But he's quietly been all over the world and in other notable promotions fans will recognize like ECW and WCW, to name a few. His briefly making an appearance or two in AEW would sort of fit on multiple levels.

BS Meter: 5

Let's go 50-50 on Foley actually making an appearance in AEW. The promotion expressing interest is a no-brainer: Why wouldn't all involved at least try? If it happens, AEW would get a big bump and Foley would get to explore new things while back in the sport, so everybody would win.

John Cena Classic is…a mess?

5 of 5
WWE Backlash

The Rumor

The announcement of the John Cena Classic was met with confusion. Apparently, WWE is just as lost. According to WrestleVotes Radio (h/t Knight), there's not a date planned for the Classic and it is still something they're trying to figure out.

Reaction

To show just what a mess this all is, the report also notes that Netflix expressed interest in hosting the Classic, but that it is…not planned out. That tracks: Cena's historic announcement, promoted as such, is starting to feel historic for all the wrong reasons.

BS Meter: 1

That tracks. Cena's reveal that he had an announcement felt very rushed at the last second. He showed up and announced a new title and tournament in which fans will be able to vote on who advances. That includes voting through the actual loser of a match, it seems. There's no further details, no planned dates and streaming platforms seem confused too. Entertaining…just in all the wrong ways.
