Highlights
Aronimink Golf Club is hosting the PGA Championship for the first time since 1962, and the tricky course and whipping winds created a challenge for most of the competitors.
Scheffler managed to overcome the harsh conditions to post five birdies against two bogeys and tie for the lead at three-under 67. He had to contend with some heckling from Philadelphia Eagles fans since he's a known fan of the Dallas Cowboys. This is the first time in his career that he's held a lead or co-lead after the first round of a major.
Patrick Reed finished at two-under 68 and was the only player to go the entire round without recording a single bogey.
Jon Rahm (-1) had the shot of the day with an eagle on hole No. 2:
While others were able to find success, back-to-back reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy found himself near the bottom of the leaderboard after posting a four-over 74. He closed the round with four straight bogeys on the front nine, a first-time occurrence in his storied career.
McIlroy told reporters after the round that he feels like he's had trouble with his driver all season. He had a one-word assessment for his performance in the opening round: "S--t."
"I'm just not driving the ball well enough," McIlroy said. "It's been a problem all year for the most part. Like, I miss it right, and then I want to try to correct it. And then I'll overdo it, and I'll miss it left. It's a little bit of back and forth that way. So that's pretty frustrating, especially when like I pride myself on driving the ball well. I just need to try to figure it out. I honestly thought I'd figured it out. Coming in here, I hit it well on Sunday at Quail Hollow, and then hit it good at home on Monday. Then even — obviously I had to curtail the practice round Tuesday, but hit it decent yesterday. Just sort of, once I get under the gun, it just seems like it starts to go a little bit wayward on me."
McIlroy will have some work to do to make the cut in the second round on Friday, while Scheffler will try to continue his march toward a second straight PGA Championship victory.
