Jannik Sinner Breaks Novak Djokovic's Masters Record, What Did He Say About Making Tennis History?
Jannik Sinner has put together the longest Masters win streak in the history of men's tennis.
Sinner recorded his 32nd straight Masters 1000 victory with a Thursday quarterfinals win over Andrey Rublev at the Italian Open.
Novak Djokovic set the previous record of 31 straight wins in Masters tournaments, which are ranked just below Grand Slams, in 2011.
"It's tough to say, because I don't play for records, I play just for my own story," Sinner said Thursday after his win over Rublev. "Obviously, at the same time, it means a lot to me.
"But tomorrow is another day, another opponent... now, for me, the highest priority is trying to recover as much as I can physically, and then we see how it goes."
Sinner secured his historic victory Thursday with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rublev that also marked his 27th straight win across all levels of competition.
The achievement came less than two weeks after Sinner became the first man to win the five straight Masters 1000 titles, as well as the first to win the first four Masters events of the season, with a victory over Alexander Zverev at the Madrid Open.
Sinner now has the chance to make more history this week in Rome. A victory this weekend would make him the first Italian man since Adriano Panatta in 1976 to win his home country's tournament.
It would also allow him to join Djokovic as the second player in men's tennis history to win all nine Masters 1000 tournaments.
Sinner will first be tasked with getting past the semifinals, where he will take on either No. 7 Daniil Medvedev or Spain's Martin Landaluce. The two are set to begin their own quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. ET.
