Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage of AEW Dynamite on May 13.
With Double or Nothing approaching on May 24, All Elite Wrestling is in full hype mode to make the pay-per-view feel important.
Here's a look at what was advertised for Wednesday's show:
Let's take a look at what happened on this week's episode of Dynamite.
Bucks, Cage, Cope and Orange Cassidy vs. FTR, The Dogs and Tommaso Ciampa
1 of 6
Last time in action: Bang Bang Gang and Bucks defeated Death Riders and The Dogs (Collision, May 6), FTR defeated Cage and Cope (Dynasty)
Renee Paquette approached MJF backstage to ask him about the title vs. hair stipulation against Darby Allin, but he didn't say a word. He walked past a handful of different bald men and looked despondent.
When we went live in the arena, Tommaso Ciampa was out first for the heel team in the 10-man tag match that kicked things off. He was joined by Cash Wheeler, Dax Harwood, Clark Conners and David Finlay.
Orange Cassidy, Nick and Matt Jackson, Christian Cage and Adam Copeland made up the babyface team. Everyone started brawling as soon as the bell rang, which is similar to how the last 10-man tag match started last week.
As you would probably expect if you know how AEW matches are structured, this was chaos from start to finish. A lot of what we saw was executed well, but knowing which members of each team were legal at any given time was a guessing game.
The comedic moments were spaced out appropriately, and everyone brought a lot of energy to the ring. Some moments didn't land, but they were few and far between. Copeland got the win for his team by pinning Conners.
Result: The Bucks, Cage, Cope and OC won
Grade: B-
Notable Moments and Observations
Mike Bailey vs. Westbrook, Kevin Knight vs. Brian Cage
2 of 6
Last time in action: Mike Bailey won a squash (Collision, May 9)
The next match saw Mike Bailey take on a local talent who goes by the mononym, Westbrook. They had a nice opening sequence, but Westbrook slipped when attempting something on the ropes. Bailey quickly took advantage and got the win.
Result: Bailey defeated Westbrook
Grade: Incomplete
Last time in action: Kevin Knight lost to Darby Allin (Dynamite, May 6)
Brian Cage ended up being the opponent for Kevin Knight's TNT Championship open challenge, which started immediately after Speedball's match.
The Machine's physique looked more defined than ever, and he used his power to start throwing Knight around the ring right away. The Jet got in a little offense, but Cage countered a suicide dive and sent him crashing to the floor.
Cage is one of those powerhouses who works well with smaller guys because he has more quickness and agility than you would expect, so they had no problem making this a fun encounter. The Jet picked up the win to retain his title.
Result: Knight defeated Cage
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
Will Ospreay vs. Ace Austin
3 of 6
Last time in action: Will Ospreay lost to Mark Davis (Dynamite, April 22), Bang Bang Gang and Bucks defeated Death Riders and The Dogs (Collision, May 6)
Will Ospreay was looking to put his Death Riders training to good use in this match against Ace Austin of The Bang Bang Gang.
Ospreay shook Austin's hand before they locked up and started trading counters. The high-flyers kept things relatively grounded early on. They still used a quick pace, but most of what they did was more technical.
Ace focused a lot of his attacks and submissions on Ospreay's neck during the first half. When we returned from a break, the former IWGP champion started building some momentum.
This was a very entertaining contest that not only gave Ospreay a chance to show off but also put Austin in a high-profile position without the rest of the Bang Bang Gang involved.
Ospreay won with an armbar instead of his usual Hidden Blade or Stormbreaker. Ospreay shook his hand again to show some respect. Samoa Joe and The Opps came out to taunt him ahead of their upcoming Owen Hart Tournament match.
Anthony Bowens and Katsuyori Shibata walked to the ring to attack him, but all of The Death Riders came out to back Ospreay up.
Result: Ospreay defeated Austin
Grade: A-
Notable Moments and Observations
Triangle of Madness vs. Brawling Birds and Hikaru Shida
4 of 6
Last time in action: Triangle of Madness defeated Persephone and Alex Windsor (Collision, April 22)
Thekla, Skye Blue and Julia Hart were out first for a trios bout against Hikaru Shida, Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor.
The Triangle of Madness took control with a sneak attack, but the babyfaces recovered and sent them out of the ring to regroup.
Several of these women are known for being hard hitters and aggressive in the ring, so this match had some good physicality. Shida seemed hesitant to tag in at one point, but then she did and went on a brief rampage.
Unfortunately, Thekla caused a disqualification by hitting Hayter with the title, so we didn't get a clean ending. Shida chose not to help Hayter, but Willow Nightingale, Thunder Rosa and Mina Shirakawa did.
Result: Brawling Birds and Shida won by DQ
Grade: B-
Notable Moments and Observations
Darby Allin vs. Konosuke Takeshita
5 of 6
Last time in action: The Don Callis Family lost to The Young Bucks (Dynasty), Darby Allin defeated Pac (Collision, May 9)
Darby Allin continued his weekly title defenses on Wednesday by putting the world title on the line against Konosuke Takeshita.
Allin was giving up more size than usual to Takeshita, so the challenger quickly took control and started punishing the champion.
Allin's whole thing is that he can take a lot of punishment and keep going, and Takeshita made sure to test his limits in a very physical match. This wasn't as bloody as some of the champ's other recent bouts, but it was violent in a different way.
When Callis tried to interfere, Takeshita waved him off and said he wanted to win on his own. Both men had some close two-counts before Allin hit a pair of Coffin Drops for the pin and the win to end a great match.
Result: Allin defeated Takeshita
Grade: B+
Notable Moments and Observations
The Final Word
6 of 6This week's Dynamite featured a lot of great action, and depending on what you enjoy most, there were a few options for the match of the night.
Allin and Takeshita closed the show with a competitive bout, and the show opened with a 10-man tag that was mayhem from start to finish.
However, Ospreay and Austin stole the show from a technical standpoint. They both brought their A-game to the ring and made each other look incredible.
The show ended with MJF coming out to sign his hair vs. title contract for Double or Nothing. After talking some trash and signing on the dotted line, he attacked Allin. The show ended with Knight saving Allin from a tombstone from the middle rope.
Grade: B+
