Jake Paul Explains Why Boxing Career Is in Doubt in Video After Broken Jaw Injury vs. Anthony Joshua
After his knockout loss against Anthony Joshua in December, Jake Paul revealed that there's a chance he may never fight again.
During an appearance on Monday's episode of The Ariel Helwani Show, Paul told Uncrowned's Ariel Helwani that he recently underwent scans to assess his recovery from a broken jaw suffered against Joshua, and "we'll see what my doctors say and if I can even fight again."
Paul was facing the biggest opponent of his career when he met Joshua, who was required to weigh in at 245 pounds for the fight. Paul typically fights in the cruiserweight division at 200 pounds.
While Paul lasted until the sixth round, he suffered the fate that many expected when Joshua landed a stiff right hand that sent him to the canvas. The 29-year-old wasn't knocked out, but he revealed in the immediate aftermath that he suffered a broken jaw.
Paul also told Helwani that he lost a tooth following the knockout loss and likely is "going to have to get some sort of implant," which would further complicate his return to competition.
Paul was asked if he's thought about leaving boxing behind after all he's accomplished, and he admitted that it has crossed his mind. He has people around him who would prefer that he end his boxing career, but he added that he still has a desire to continue competing.
"I'm not done, I can just feel in my spirit, my soul and my heart that I have more fights left and unfinished business in my mind," Paul told Helwani. "And injuries are part of any sport. I think potentially this could be a good outcome. ... I definitely don't feel like I'm done, and I want to keep on fighting.
