Ranking Every NFL Team's Path to the 2026 Playoffs

Only 14 NFL teams survive the 18-week grind to earn a playoff spot, but at least 25 enter September convinced they belong there. 

That's the beauty—and cruelty—of a league built on parity and zero patience. 

To separate summer hype from genuine contention, here is how all 32 teams stack up on their realistic path to the 2026 playoffs.

32. Arizona Cardinals -- There is plenty of skill-position talent, but it's nothing but bridges and desperation at quarterback for a team coming off a three-win season and looking at the toughest schedule in arguably the most difficult division in the league. 

31. Miami Dolphins -- Meanwhile, the rebuilding Dolphins have the most challenging schedule in the AFC. Even if Malik Willis proves to be the guy, they're almost certainly still a year or more away. 

30. New York Jets -- Miami with slightly more talent and experience but a lot less upside. And 35-year-old turnover machine Geno Smith is not the answer. 

29. Las Vegas Raiders -- They went 3-14 despite remaining relatively healthy in 2025, and there will almost certainly be growing pains as they become accustomed to a new staff and new quarterbacks in the strong AFC West in 2026. 

28. Cleveland Browns -- The Myles Garrett trade was a dead giveaway that they're thinking long-term rather than focusing on 2026. Question marks at quarterback and inevitable growing pains with young offensive talent in general likely indicate this'll be a third consecutive season with a handful or fewer wins for the Browns.

27. Tennessee Titans -- New offense, new weapons and a still-questionable offensive line for Cam Ward, who did not prove to be a franchise quarterback in his rookie season. The ceiling is rising, but keep in mind they have a lot of ground to make up after winning six total games the last two seasons combined. 

26. Carolina Panthers -- They snuck in last year despite a losing record and a negative-69 scoring margin, and the NFC South remains wide open. That said, their schedule is the third-toughest in the league this year, and I still don't trust quarterback Bryce Young behind an offensive line that will at the very least lack continuity to start 2026. 

25. Atlanta Falcons -- Not a great start to camp from a health perspective with both Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. out. Still, the talent those quarterbacks possess combined with Bijan Robinson's game-breaking abilities keeps them in the picture with a new coaching staff in a soft division.  

24. Indianapolis Colts -- I don't trust Daniel Jones, especially coming off that injury. His supporting cast is good, not great, and the division continues to build itself up. They've won eight or nine games the last three years, and I'm expecting about the same at most in 2026. 

23. Washington Commanders -- They made the NFC Championship Game in 2024, and they'll almost certainly be back in the picture if quarterback Jayden Daniels can return to health and form. But that's far from guaranteed, and it's possible that run was the outlier for a team with major questions on defense. 

22. New York Giants -- I really like the current trajectory considering what Jaxson Dart did as a rookie and the talent they continue to add under incoming head coach John Harbaugh. That said, there will still be plenty of hurdles for a team completing a rebuild in a division with four that have high ceilings.

21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- The Bucs crashed and burned down the stretch last year, and I'm not sure they have the young talent to push back against that negative momentum in 2026. The softness of the division keeps an experienced team on the edge of the bubble with a tough sked. 

20. Minnesota Vikings -- If Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy takes the reins and succeeds with plenty of support on both sides of the ball, they're at least a wild-card team. If both fail, they're looking at another .500-ish campaign at best. 

19. Pittsburgh Steelers -- They're always in the thick of it, and Aaron Rodgers has enough support to keep it that way in 2026. Unless he completely falls off a cliff—which is certainly possible in his age-43 season—the Steelers should be good for between eight and 11 wins. 

18. Cincinnati Bengals -- Talent-wise, there shouldn't be much doubt. And yet, the Bengals have missed the playoffs in three straight underachieving seasons. There's no guarantee Joe Burrow will stay healthy, as he's failed to do so in two of the last three campaigns. It's a toss-up. 

17. Dallas Cowboys -- The defense looks better on paper, but that's a lot of change to absorb and Dak Prescott has a bad habit of faltering after strong campaigns. It's entirely possible Dallas is more balanced but not significantly more successful in 2026. 

16. New Orleans Saints -- If quarterback Tyler Shough can continue down his current path, a team that went 4-1 to wrap up the 2025 season should be right there in the weak NFC South. They also have one of the easiest schedules in football. 

15. Green Bay Packers -- The Packers have missed the playoffs just once this decade, and they still won eight games that year. That said, Micah Parsons' injury is a real pain, and the NFC North is stacked. 

14. New England Patriots -- You'd think they'd be more of a sure thing after an awesome 2025 campaign, but the risk of a Super Bowl hangover is high for a team that had extraordinary injury luck and capitalized on a comically soft schedule in 2025. Plus, the Bills are realistically the team to beat in the AFC East. 

13. Jacksonville Jaguars -- Liam Coen's team enters 2026 on an eight-game regular-season winning streak, and quarterback Trevor Lawrence really found his groove down the stretch in Coen's system. That said, they'll have to sustain that against stiffer competition, and the Texans will be a tough out in the AFC South. 

12. Chicago Bears -- The defending NFC North champions should be just as good if not better in Year 2 for Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams. Still, the more experienced and talented Lions should be expected to bounce back in that tough division. The task could be taller for Chicago in 2026. 

11. Los Angeles Chargers -- Jim Harbaugh has won 11 games in each of his first two seasons, and that offense could get a jolt from Mike McDaniel as well as the return to health of its two pillar tackles. That said, the Chiefs are still there and the Broncos are an emerging juggernaut.

10. Kansas City Chiefs -- The Chargers are the better team at this moment, but Patrick Mahomes looks to be on track for a return to health with a lot to prove. We can't rule out a bounce-back from Mahomes, Reid and the old gang. 

9. Seattle Seahawks -- There's no questioning the talent, coaching and (now) the experience. But they'll have a target on their back and I could see the mistake-prone Sam Darnold coming back to earth in a very competitive division. 

8. Houston Texans -- The defense is just ridiculous. C.J. Stroud is a concern, but can it really get worse? And they still won 12 games despite a poor season from Stroud in 2025. 

7. San Francisco 49ers -- Even after getting hammered by injuries in 2025, the 49ers found a way into the postseason in a very strong division. It would require a blowup for them to fall short in 2026, but that's always possible considering their snakebitten recent history. 

6. Baltimore Ravens -- It would take another extended stretch without Lamar Jackson for the AFC's co-favorite to miss the playoffs again. But that's always a possibility considering his history and style of play. 

5. Denver Broncos -- No quarterback in the NFL is on track to benefit from a better combination of defensive and offensive line talent than Bo Nix in his third season. The margin for error is pretty large. 

4. Detroit Lions -- With the league's third-best DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average), the Lions were a complete outlier as a non-playoff team in 2025.

3. Los Angeles Rams -- The overwhelming Super Bowl favorite has been to the dance in all but one season this decade. Even if they catch some tough breaks and fall short of the NFC West crown, a wild-card slot appears to be a given. 

2. Philadelphia Eagles -- Nick Sirianni has made the playoffs in each of his five seasons since becoming head coach in Philadelphia, going to the Super Bowl twice. Even in the event of a down year, they'll be good for a wild-card spot. 

1. Buffalo Bills -- Josh Allen has led the Bills to at least 11 wins in six consecutive seasons, and the team hasn't missed the playoffs since Allen was a rookie in 2018. This is a no-brainer, even if getting there alone will no longer satisfy Bills fans.
