Floyd Mayweather Gives Manny Pacquiao Boxing Fight Timeline Status Update
Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are close to running it back.
The retired Mayweather announced Thursday that he and Pacquiao are close to coming to terms for a rematch of their incredibly hyped 2015 showdown, won by Mayweather in a unanimous decision.
Much like the first fight—which seemed to take years to finally materialize—the second bout has had its fair share of complications.
ESPN's Andreas Hale reported Tuesday that the matchup "has been in turmoil ever since Mayweather suggested that it would be an exhibition and not a pro boxing match. Since then, Team Pacquiao has been steadfast that the fight would happen even though Mayweather was in breach of his contractual obligation."
The bout was initially planned to happen at The Sphere in Las Vegas, but that appears to no longer be the case.
Mayweather is keeping his exhibition schedule busy, with fights against Mike Tyson and Greek kickboxer Mike Zambidis on the docket.
But Mayweather's potential tax issues could impact the Zambidis fight, set to take place in Greece. The IRS reportedly intends to revoke his U.S. passport due to $7.25 million in owed, unpaid taxes, per Mike Coppinger of The Ring.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, has maintained he isn't interested in the fight against Mayweather being an exhibition.
"I wouldn't fight an exhibition," he said in April. "It's either a real fight or nothing."
The MGM Grand Garden Arena and T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas remain two viable options for the matchup should it come to fruition.
