CFB Coaches Reportedly Support 24-Team CFP Format, More Major Rule Changes in Vote

Andrew PetersMay 5, 2026

The prospect of a 24-team College Football Playoff format reportedly is gaining more momentum among college coaches.

Per Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger, the American Football Coaches Association voted in favor of recommending that college leaders introduce a playoff with "the maximum number of participants."

Additionally, the AFCA voted to recommend getting rid of conference championship games and preserving the Army-Navy game's exclusive time window while allowing other games to be played on the same day.

Under the format suggested by the AFCA, the 24-team Playoff would end by the second week of January.

The AFCA features a number of prominent college football coaches, including Illinois' Bret Bielema, Oklahoma's Brent Venables and Vanderbilt's Clark Lea. Still, it can only give recommendations to the NCAA about decisions regarding the Playoff and other aspects of college football.

According to Dellenger, the AFCA is expected to publicly release its decisions soon. AFCA executive director Craig Bohl told Dellenger that the association's Board of Trustees "discussed and adopted the recommendations."

Dellenger added that the CFP's governance committee, which is made up of the 10 FBS conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director, met two weeks ago to discuss the Playoff format. The SEC is in favor of a 16-team model, while the Big Ten favors the 24-team format.

If the Playoff moves to 24 teams, the most popular model would feature an all-at-large field determined by CFP rankings. The Group of Six leagues would get an automatic spot, the top eight teams would get a first-round bye and the Nos. 9-24 would play their first-round games on campuses.

In a scenario where there are no conference championship games, the Playoff would seemingly start right after the end of the regular season.

The CFP will keep the 12-team format next season, so any changes won't come until at least the 2027 campaign.
