Golden Tempo Comes From Behind For the Win
2 of 2
Golden Tempo entered Saturday as a 23-1 underdog and ran his way into the history books, his name forever etched in the annals of horse racing history, winning the 152nd Run for the Roses.
It was, quite literally, a come-from-behind victory for the colt. Jockey Jose Ortiz rode Golden Tempo from the back of the field, up the middle, and to the outside before seizing the lead and, ultimately, the win. It was a monumental comeback that saw the horse and jockey make up 15-20 lengths to get to the front of the pack.
During the post-race press conference, trainer Cherie DeVaux, the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner, said of his comeback:
"That's how he runs. So it's not like we did anything different than his previous starts. I watched Jose come up and get himself in position going into the final turn, and about the 3/16th pole I thought, 'We're probably going to win this.' And then I really kind of blacked out after that."
It was a masterful display of patience and pacing, with Ortiz maneuvering Golden Tempo past the competition and the horse kicking his way to the front of the pack.
He overcame race favorite Renegade, winning by a neck.
Commandment, one of the favorites entering the race, struggled with conditioning and pushing past the field, ending the race in seventh place.
Ocelli, a 70-1 longshot who was added to the field after a scratch, finished third.
