Club Brugge undoubtedly sit as one of the more threatening sides United could have hoped to draw on Friday, although they will also be pleased to have avoided the likes of Monaco, Lazio and CSKA Moscow.
They finished as runners-up to champions Gent in the Belgian Pro League last season, but Michel Preud'homme's side were top for much of the 2014-15 campaign, as pointed out by the BBC's John Bennett:
These two teams have never met in competition before, making it an historic clash between two of Europe's old powers, the Red Devils having been established in 1878, while Club Brugge were formed in 1891.
The tie presents Louis van Gaal with an early opportunity to test out a selection of his summer signings, hoping that Bastian Schweinsteiger will be fully fit by late August and to see Memphis Depay in scoring form by that point.
Club Brugge were the strongest attacking team in Belgium last season, scoring 69 goals during the normal campaign followed by an additional 16 scores in the play-offs.
Real Madrid TV presenter Phil Kitromilides highlights Jose Izquierdo as a particular forward talent, while Kistof Terreur of Het Laatste Nieuws hailed the longevity of Timmy Simons, their 38-year-old veteran:
Van Gaal is familiar with his impending opponents, too, having represented Royal Antwerp during his playing career.
The Dutchman even made his Belgian Pro League debut against the Blauw-Zwart, bringing back memories of his Antwerp bow 42 years ago, per Terreur:
With a Champions League group-stage berth on the line, United certainly won't be underestimating their foes despite the gulf in credentials, and they will be hoping to return to the competition after missing out entirely last term.
The official Manchester United Twitter account quotes the manager as being aware of Club Brugge's recent exploits, hoping his return to Belgium is a successful one:
Club Brugge recently proved their mettle in a 4-3 aggregate win over Panathinaikos in the third qualifying round of the Champions League, while United haven't been tested in competition as recently.
First and foremost, Van Gaal's men will seek a solid start to their Premier League season against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, but the pressure is on for the club to make their comeback against Europe's elite.
