Arsenal Transfer News: Arsene Wenger Addresses Karim Benzema Rumours in Presser

Tom SunderlandAug 7, 2015

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted the Gunners' supposed interest in Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is nothing but "media talk" as he addressed the media on Friday.

ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney provided Wenger's comments ahead of Sunday's match with West Ham United:

The Real Madrid striker has been fervently linked with a move to north London this summer and Pete Jenson of the MailOnline reported he could be available for a club-record fee of £45 million.

Spanish expert Guillem Balague wrote for Spanish newspaper AS, intimating that Arsenal don't have the funds necessary to purchase Benzema and would need to sell some of their stars first.

While Wenger may have been quick to play down speculation of a move for Benzema, however, the tactician hinted he may still look to sign attacking reinforcements, according to Delaney:

To make matters more complicated, Spanish newspaper Marca (h/t Inside Spanish Football) reported on Friday that Benzema has been ruled out of action for three weeks with a thigh strain.

Per the official Arsenal Twitter account, Wenger confirmed a heavy workload over the summer has left Alexis Sanchez fatigued, ruling him out of the season's start:

The north Londoners completed a deadline-day deal for former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck last summer, but he managed to score just four goals in 25 Premier League appearances.

As things stand, Olivier Giroud is the primary front man at the Emirates Stadium, but the Frenchman has suffered from fatigue in the past when the club has leaned too heavily on his talents.

Wenger has a limited amount of time to improve his squad and James Olley of the London Evening Standard quoted the manager proclaiming the English season begins too early:

Sunday's opener against the Hammers promises to serve as the first real test as to whether Arsenal are capable of a title charge this season following a Community Shield win over reigning champions Chelsea.

Benzema's potential move from the Spanish capital has a raft of conflicting factors surrounding it, but the Gunners may yet hold a hope of seeing Giroud's international compatriot arrive this summer.
