Dean Ambrose Teaming with Roman Reigns Stalls Both Superstars' Momentum
Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns are quite a team, but it’s a shame they still join forces frequently.
They were relentless as members of The Shield, with current WWE champion Seth Rollins. The Shield couldn’t be stopped until last year’s implosion on the night after WWE Payback, when Rollins turned on his teammates.
Surprisingly, Reigns and Ambrose still fight side by side. They remain best friends after the split. The two will team up once again at SummerSlam, taking on the reunited Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper.
All four men are no strangers to each other. Ambrose and Reigns are sworn enemies of Wyatt and Harper. They’ve had problems with them for nearly 18 months.
It makes sense for the two men to join forces once more. However, they should not have been put in this position.
Reigns has struggled since he returned in December. The fans didn’t support him winning the Royal Rumble and his main event debut at WrestleMania 31. Ambrose got the fans rooting for him but accomplished nothing. His last pay-per-view victory happened at Extreme Rules, where he defeated Harper. Ambrose main evented the next three but was on the losing end.
Both men teamed up out of happenstance. They’re friends but came together at a time when they needed to thrive on their own. SummerSlam is not the stage for this, and teaming up will stall both Superstars’ momentum.
It falls upon WWE Creative for not having anything to do with them. They needed marquee matches in the card but are relegated to their tag match. Those spots are most likely filled by Kevin Owens, Cesaro and Rusev. Two of those three enjoyed recent surges to spots normally filled by Reigns and Ambrose.
However, the tag match could be the catalyst both men need.
The Shield never really broke up. One of them left for greener pastures. Hopes of a reunion will always be high as long as Ambrose and Reigns team up.
That must end. It’s time for both to move on to the next stage of their careers.
SummerSlam could start that with a betrayal. Either man turning on the other would be just the ploy needed to end The Shield for good.
WWE needs to tread carefully when deciding who turns on who. If Reigns turned on Ambrose, it would expose a new side of the Samoan. No one has really seen Reigns as a bad guy on his own.
The only problem is whether Reigns can carry feuds and matches as a heel. Reigns is a great athlete and powerhouse but is far from a ring general. Ambrose is the better heel of the two. He performed exceptionally with William Regal at WWE’s now-defunct Florida Championship Wrestling.
The issue is Reigns’ popularity. He gained momentum when feuding with Wyatt, but Ambrose is arguably more popular than Reigns. Making Ambrose the bad guy to Reigns might put Reigns in an unfavorable spot for WWE fans. Considering WWE wants Reigns as its next big thing, that wouldn’t help either man.
The bottom line is that both men shouldn’t have been in this spot. Reigns and Ambrose earned the chance to go their separate ways. Frankly, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose joining forces is proof that both men’s momentum has stalled.
