WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from August 6
Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the action, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show, as well as make a few predictions for future events.
This was a very light two-hour show with just four matches. You could say it was five, but two of them basically counted as one.
SmackDown has had a string of good shows the past few weeks. This episode wasn't spectacular, but it was worth watching for any fan.
The Divas were given a lot of time to work with, and they delivered a match that was enjoyable and made all four women involved look good.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's SmackDown.
Opening Segment
1 of 6SmackDown opened with the tribute video remembering Rowdy Roddy Piper's career. One thing you have to admit is that WWE's production crew always does a great job making tribute videos. It's just too bad we have had to see so many over the past year.
Roman Reigns was the first person out when the show started in the arena. After a few minutes of talking about Bray Wyatt, he got to the point. He challenged Wyatt and Luke Harper to a tag team match at SummerSlam, with Dean Ambrose being Reigns' partner.
Things got a little more interesting when Rusev and Summer Rae came out. They traded some insults and announced they were in a match later in the show. It was an average opening segment at best. Reigns hit all the right notes to sell his feud with Wyatt, but it wasn't his best effort.
Grade: C-
Notes and Highlights
- Rusev's joke about calling Reigns "Lana" after their match was just plain weird.
- Reigns sounded like he was reading directly from a script throughout the entire segment. His energy was good, but it didn't feel like his words.
- Right before SmackDown started, Syfy played a short advertisement that focused on Cesaro. That's a good sign that his push will continue.
The New Day vs. The Prime Time Players and Mark Henry
2 of 6Mark Henry joined Titus O'Neil and Darren Young to take on the entire New Day stable. Bringing Henry into this bout felt like a cheap way to get all three members of The New Day into a tag match with the champions.
The pacing was almost exactly the same as it would have been if it was a normal tag team match. It was entertaining for what it was, but this didn't feel like an important chapter in what should be an important feud.
Henry and The Prime Time Players picked up the win after the World's Strongest Man finished off Kofi Kingston. As usual, The New Day was an entertaining act, but it wasn't enough to make this a memorable match.
However, its interview segment backstage following its loss was pretty funny.
Grade: C
Notes and Highlights
- How can you not laugh at the way Kofi Kingston and Big E clap on their way to the ring?
- PTP's old entrance music was much better. Their current song doesn't fit their personalities as much.
- Jimmy Uso was acting like he just realized that Xavier Woods never shuts his mouth. Doesn't Uso pay attention while he is working commentary?
- It feels like WWE will never trust Henry with a feud again after being on the shelf for injuries several times over the past few years.
Charlotte and Becky Lynch vs. Sasha Banks and Naomi
3 of 6Charlotte and Naomi were having a good match when Sasha Banks interfered and forced The Authority to make this a tag team contest.
Becky Lynch joined Charlotte against Banks and Naomi for the rest of the bout. It was great to see the tag portion of the match was given two full segments, for a total of three in a row for the Divas.
The Divas had a lot of time to work with, and they did their best to keep it interesting until the very end. Naomi picked up a big win when she managed to pin Charlotte.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- It's interesting to note that WWE didn't scrub the name Submission Sorority from the show's audio after officials found out that was also the name of an adult website.
- It seemed like Naomi had no idea how to take the Figure Eight submission from Charlotte. The hold never quite looked right.
Stardust vs. Zack Ryder
4 of 6Stardust picked up a relatively easy win over Zack Ryder in a singles match. Nothing of note happened, except the fact that Ryder got in some decent offense.
Between the video package, commentary and promo after the match, WWE is really pushing the feud between Stardust and Stephen Amell.
Amell might not be a huge star yet, but there is likely a large cross section of Arrow and WWE fans, so he should get a decent response when he comes out on Monday.
Grade: C+
Notes and Highlights
- Zack Ryder was featured on Raw, SmackDown and NXT this week. He hasn't had this much screen time since he was the United States champion.
- Tom Phillips said Jared Leto's name wrong. He also never realized that he and Lawler share names with Tom and Jerry the cartoon characters.
- Random thought: Backstage interviewer Rich Brennan looks like he is the product of a cloning experiment with Michael Cole and Corey Graves. I can't be the only one who sees it.
Roman Reigns vs. Rusev
5 of 6We've seen Rusev and Reigns in the ring before, but it still feels like a fresh matchup. It's easy to assume that everyone has faced everyone when you look at the repetitiveness of feuds, but these two guys haven't been overdone yet.
This match was everything you would think it would be based off the participants. Both men looked good, but the bout was nothing special as a whole.
Reigns has gotten much better since the beginning of the year, but Rusev is even more impressive because he is always adding new things to her repertoire.
Lana came out to fight with Summer Rae, and it upset Rusev enough to allow Reigns to hit the Spear for the pin and the win.
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights
- Rusev's facial expressions during his matches are great.
- Reigns needs some new signature moves. The Superman Punch and Drive By Dropkick are getting old.
- His Spear is getting better, though.
Final Thoughts and Predictions
6 of 6If you count both Divas matches as one long contest, this week's show only featured four bouts. That would normally make SmackDown a disappointment, but it actually worked well.
The Divas were given an especially long time to work their singles and six-man tag team matches, the main event and tag team match were just the right length, and Stardust vs. Ryder went longer than you would think a squash match would go.
Overall, it was a solid week for the blue brand. The two previous shows were much better, but this one wasn't too bad.
It's great to see everyone stepping up while several Superstars are out with injuries. Hopefully everyone is healthy in a few weeks, because it's not going to be easy to fill up a four-hour pay-per-view.
Predictions
- Stephen Amell and Stardust will agree to a match at SummerSlam.
- John Cena will accept Seth Rollins' challenge for a title vs. title match.
- SummerSlam will feature a Tag Team Turmoil match for the titles.
- Lana and Summer Rae will have a short match at SummerSlam.
- There will be a bout at SummerSlam featuring NXT Superstars.
