Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.
Styles Talks In-Ring Future, New WWE Role
Recently retired WWE Superstar and upcoming Hall of Famer AJ Styles addressed the possibility of an in-ring return in the future during an interview this week.
Appearing on his new podcast, Phenomenally Retro (h/t WrestlingInc.com's Nishant Jayaram), Styles admitted that he isn't entirely sure if he will ever come out of retirement due to his fear of not living up to the high standard he set over the course of his career.
"I don't know," Styles said. "I mean, it's hard to know something like that because there's always that fear of not being you. And that's what I feared the most. And IĀ would imagine that's what most guys who've done well in their career fear the most, is like, I just don't want to embarrass myself. You know, I want to be that same guy that they remember. And everybody thinks they're going to get that guy. It's just not going to happen. It's not going to be the match that you think you're going to get. It's just not there. It's not the same anymore."
The Phenomenal One's last match was a loss to Gunther at Royal Rumble in a bout that saw him put his career on the line.
Many questioned whether Styles was truly retiring, but a few weeks later, Styles made it clear that he was during an episode of Raw honoring his career. The show closed with The Undertaker informing Styles that he would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2026.
Styles was satisfied with his retirement match against Gunther, saying, "I think I do what I can in the ring that I knew that I could do perfect. I mean, I hit a 450 in my last match. Doesn't that mean anything to anybody? And it was pretty freaking cleanāand I'm 48. I'm okay with that. I'm okay withĀ that being the last thing that you remember, like, this freaking guy was still hitting some crazy moves."
While Styles has not intention of wrestling again any time soon, if ever, he is still set to remain part of the WWE family moving forward.
In another segment of the podcast (h/t Jayaram), Styles explained the job he will have with WWE, serving in what sounds like a hybrid role as a talent scout, mentor and trainer.
"I'm on the internet checking out talent because that's kind of part of my job with WWE now," Styles said. "I'm looking for talent, I'm looking to see if I can do anything for them if they can get better ⦠little things like that because if there's a possibility of them, I don't know, get a WWE ID or something like that, then hopefully I can facilitate in getting that to happen. As of right now, it's a little slow, but there are phone calls that are going to have to be made to make sure that my job is done.
"And it's not just with indie talent, it'll be NXT talent as well, and maybe even some main roster talent. I'm going to Seattle next Monday Night Raw to talk with talent and who knows. Sometimes you need to talk to somebody to see how they're feeling, and maybe they want to go down to the PC and work on some stuff. I'm that guy, that's what I'm there for."
Styles is one of the all-time greats, achieving enormous success in WWE and other companies across the world, including TNA, ROH and New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
He has long been regarded as one of the best in-ring performers of all time, and he proved during his decade-long run in WWE that his skill set could translate to the biggest stage in wrestling.
The Phenomenal One was a two-time WWE champion, three-time United States champion, one-time intercontinental champion and two-time tag team champion, and he is the perfect person to mentor young wrestlers as they look to make it in WWE.
Femi Interested in Match vs. Lesnar
Oba Femi vs. Brock Lesnar is widely viewed as one of the biggest dream matches that could possibly happen in WWE right now, and Femi is looking forward to the possibility of making it a reality.
In an interview with TVInsider.com's Scott Fishman, Femi suggested that a match against Lesnar is inevitable, and expressed his belief that it would be the perfect bow on top of Lesnar's career.
"What a run for him," Femi said. "He had two separate runs, and they've both been fantastic. It would be really cool to face him. I know the fans have been asking for that match. It's going to happen one day soon. What a run he has had the UFC champion, multiple time WWE champion, Royal Rumble winner, dominance. What a way to cap it off by facing The Ruler."
Much like Lesnar has done on the WWE main roster throughout his career, Femi dominated NXT during his time there, holding the NXT Championship twice and North American Championship once.
That dominance has continued since getting called up to the main roster, as he had a spectacular performance in the men's Royal Rumble match in January and has won singles matches against the likes of Rusev, Johnny Gargano and Kit Wilson.
Lesnar is set to have his first WrestleMania match since WrestleMania 39 in 2023, but it isn't yet clear who his opponent will be.
A couple of weeks ago on Raw, Paul Heyman laid down an open challenge, imploring anyone in the WWE locker room to step up and challenge Lesnar to a match at WrestleMania 42.
That hasn't happened yet, but Lesnar is scheduled to appear on next week's episode of Raw, and Femi's comments suggest he could potentially step up to The Beast.
Danhausen Comments on WWE Debut
Danhausen has quickly become a phenomenon among WWE fans, but his tenure with the company got off to an inauspicious start.
At Elimination Chamber in Chicago last month, Danhausen emerged from a crate along with several women who were also dressed like him. They danced down the aisle and continued dancing in the ring, eliciting some boos from the crowd.
It didn't take long for Danhausen to change the WWE Universe's perception of him, though, as entertaining backstage segments with The Judgment Day, Adam Pearce, Nick Aldis and The Miz quickly helped him get over.
During an appearance this week on the Raw Recap Show (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News), Danhausen's signature sense of humor was on full display when he was asked about his debut:
"The Chicago crowd? Oh, it was thunderous applause," Danhausen said. "It was great. I came out and it was like, 'Yes, finally Danhausen arrived!' ... I could hear each and every one of them jumping off their seats, giving me applause and saying, 'Up yours, Dracula. Danhausen did it first.'"
In the weeks since then, Danhausen has started to "curse" other Superstars during his backstage segments. That led to Dominik Mysterio losing the Intercontinental Championship and El Grande Americano getting attacked.
Last week on SmackDown, Danhausen asked Aldis to give him a mentor, and Aldis offered the services of The Miz, much to Miz's dismay.
Given the comedic ability both Danhausen and The Miz possess, they could prove to be a highly entertaining duo.
