Francis Ngannou Hints at Future Jon Jones Fight, Responds After UFC Legend Asks for Release
One of Jon Jones' longtime rivals showed support for his request to be released from the UFC.
Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou responded to Jones' recent declaration that he asked to be released from his UFC contract, saying the company should have met his financial demands and suggested that they set up a future fight if he hits the open market.
Jones' release request came after UFC president Dana White denied their negotiations for a potential fight on the UFC White House card on June 14. Jones revealed that he "even came down from my original number" but was "lowballed" in the company's fight offer.
While Jones' career appears to be at a standstill, Ngannou departed the PFL over the weekend and announced his return to MMA on Monday as part of the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano fight card on Netflix, promoted by Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions.
Ironically, Jones wasn't as kind to Ngannou when he departed the UFC in 2023 following a contract dispute. Jones repeatedly claimed that Ngannou was ducking a fight against him, but Ngannou has maintained his stance that he would welcome a meeting in the cage.
It would be a massive surprise if the UFC grants Jones' release request. He's one of the most popular fighters in the company's history, and having him fight under another promotion would create a significant financial loss.
Still, it's clear that Jones is ready to fight for his freedom, so a future fight against Ngannou could be in the cards if he gets his wish.
