Golfer Andrea Pavan Discharged From Hospital After Injuries From Fall Down Elevator Shaft
Italian golfer Andrea Pavan was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday after falling down an elevator shaft on Feb. 25, according to Caoimhe O'Neill of The Athletic.
The incident occurred when Pavan was at Stellenbosch Golf Club for the Investec South African Open, calling for an elevator at his private accommodations in Cape Town. He didn't realize that an elevator car failed to arrive when the doors opened and fell down three floors of the elevator shaft, per O'Neill.
The 36-year-old provided an update regarding his recovery in a Wednesday post on Instagram.
"Today was a big day," Pavan wrote in the caption. "I got discharged from the hospital to continue my rehab at an accommodation nearby kindly set up by the Rupert family. It truly feels like a miracle to be able to walk and start to do some basic activities, although at a very slow and careful pace."
"The road is very long but this small step feels very good! I will need to stay in South Africa another five weeks and rehab both shoulder and back, and heal other bruises and secondary injuries and once back home continue the rehab journey," he added.
Pavan underwent back and shoulder surgery after suffering severe shoulder damage and fractures to several vertebrae during the fall, via O'Neill.
He holds the No. 257 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking and has made appearances at three majors including the the 2014 U.S. Open, the 2019 Open Championship and the 2025 U.S. Open.
