Neymar Teases Retirement Timeline in Trending Video After Debut for Santos in Return from Injury
Santos and Brazilian national team superstar forward Neymar suggested in an interview Thursday that he may consider retirement by the end of 2026.
Speaking to CazéTV (h/t OneFootball.com), the 34-year-old veteran teased retirement in the near future, saying, "I don't know what will happen from now on, next year. It might be that December comes and I want to retire. I am living year by year. This year is very important for Santos, for the Brazilian national team, as it's a World Cup year, for me as well, so it's a very big challenge."
After undergoing meniscus surgery in his left knee in December, Neymar made his 2026 season debut for Santos on Sunday, playing 50 minutes in a 6-0 victory over Velo Clube.
Neymar provided some additional context regarding his recovery from knee surgery and why he decided to slow play it before returning to action this week.
"I wanted to return this season completely 100 percent, so that's why I held off on some games," Neymar said. "I know a lot of people talk nonsense, they don't know about my daily life, but we have to endure. And I wanted, along with Santos, which made a very good plan, helped me a lot in this regard. Obviously, I wanted to return earlier to help my team, but I ended up holding back a bit to be 100 percent. Pain-free, fearless, nothing, and I managed to return very well in this game. I'm happy to have returned a little better than I was before. Of course, I have to gain match rhythm, but I will be better. That's it, lots of training, with a lot of perseverance, which is what drives us until I reach my 100 percent. It will be one day at a time."
Since debuting with Santos as a 17-year-old in 2009, Neymar has been widely regarded as one of the most skilled and talented players in the world.
At the club level with Santos, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Al-Hilal, Neymar has nearly 400 career goals to his credit, and his 79 career goals for the Brazilian national team are an all-time record.
However, injuries have taken their toll on Neymar in recent years, limiting his game action for the past several seasons.
Neymar played just seven total matches total over the course of two seasons with Al-Hilal from 2023 to 2025. He bounced back to play 28 matches for Santos last season, and just made his 2026 season debut for the club this week.
Per ESPN's Adriana Garcia, injuries have had a major impact on Neymar's contributions to the Brazilian national team, as he has not played for Brazil since October 2023.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is just four months away from starting, though, and Neymar's comments suggest that he is laser focused on representing his country on the biggest stage in soccer.
Brazil have not won the World Cup since 2002, but it is fair to wonder if Neymar's retirement decision will become easier should he help lead Brazil to their record-extending sixth World Cup win this coming summer.
