'Quad God' Says Tom Brady, Steph Curry Reached Out After 'Devastating' 8th Place Finish at Olympics
Ilia Malinin didn't live up to expectations at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, but he did earn the support of a number of fellow star athletes.
During a Wednesday interview with NBC's Mike Tirico (h/t Michael Nied of People), the figure skater known as the "Quad God" revealed that Tom Brady, Steph Curry, Simone Biles and rapper Snoop Dogg were among those who reached out to him after he finished in eighth place in the men's individual competition.
"Everyone was there for me," he said. "I had so many different people each out to me. I'm honestly just so honored for that, and I feel like it just made my day, honestly."
The American had the lead after the short program and was an overwhelming favorite to take home the gold. However, he stumbled multiple times in the free skate and ended up in eighth place overall in one of the more shocking results of the Games to this point.
Malinin said the ensuing days have been filled with "a lot of ups and downs," adding, "after the free skate it was a little hard at first. Then trying to realize what happened and how devastating it was."
While Brady and Curry are all-time greats in football and basketball, it is particularly notable that Biles reached out.
After all, Biles is better positioned than almost anyone to relate to a fellow American Olympian who is facing gold-medal-or-bust expectations considering she is widely considered the greatest gymnast in history.
She appeared on NBC's Today and said, "I've sent him messages on Instagram as well. Obviously, it's all been private because I know exactly what he's going through, and I know most athletes might not be able to relate."
Biles withdrew from multiple events in the 2021 Tokyo Games because she suffered from the "twisties" but returned for the 2024 Paris Games and added three golds and one silver to her illustrious resume.
Perhaps Malinin can do something similar in four years, although he is at least leaving Milan with a gold medal from the team event. He won the men's singles portion of the team competition and was a key factor in the United States' triumph.
