The ex-girlfriend of Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid spoke out after he publicly admitted to infidelity following his bronze medal performance in the 2026 Winter Olympics.

"I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it," the woman said to Norwegian newspaper VG (via People's Rachel DeSantis). "We have had contact and he is aware of my opinions on this. [I am grateful] to my family and friends who have embraced me and supported me during this time. Also to everyone else who has thought of me and sympathized, without knowing who I am."

The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, unwittingly became part of this year's Olympics when Lægreid put her front and center after one of the biggest triumphs of his sporting career.

With a final time of 52:19.8, he placed third in the men's 20-kilometer biathlon. It was his first individual Winter Games medal.

In a stunning turn, Lægreid told Norwegian broadcaster NRK shortly after the event he had cheated on "the love of my life" and "made the biggest mistake of my life." The 28-year-old added he was prepared to "commit social suicide on live TV" in order to convey his feelings toward his ex.

The tactic has backfired, prompting Lægreid to issue a quick apology.

"I deeply regret sharing this personal story on what was a day of celebration for Norwegian biathlon," he said Wednesday, per the Associated Press' Martha Bellisle. "I am not quite myself these days, and not thinking clearly. My apologies go to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after winning gold.

"They also go to my ex-girlfriend, who unwillingly ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well. I cannot undo this, but I will now put it behind me and focus on the Olympics. I will not answer any further questions about this."

Lægreid is slated to compete in the 10-kilometer spint and 15-kilometer race in Milano Cortina. He'll presumably be part of Norway's men's relay team again as well.
