United States vs. Latvia Men's Hockey Pick
2 of 3
On paper, Latvia looks woefully outmatched in this one as the United States eyes a gold medal but in reality, the underdog in Thursday's match-up has NHL players on its roster and more importantly, has underrated chemistry on the ice.
While an upset is still unlikely, do not be surprised to see them hang in there with the Americans and make a game of it, at least early on.
The United States, though, is a star-studded squad that has no obvious weakness. Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, and Jake Guentzel help lead the way, while its goaltending depth may be the best in these Olympics.
With Connor Hellebuyck, Jake Oettinger, and Jeremy Swayman securing the net, look for the Americans to pull away and earn a momentum-building win in their pursuit of the most coveted international prize in the sport.
Prediction: Team USA over Latvia
Finland vs. Canada Women's Hockey Pick
3 of 3
A showdown of stout defenses is expected Thursday as the Canadian women look to bounce back from their devastating 5-0 loss to the United States Tuesday with a win over Finland.
It will not be easy.
The Finnish squad is an experienced group who does not allow opponents to make mistakes without capitalizing on them. They are a defense-first team that plays a trap game to their advantage. That Finland allows just 2.67 goals to opposing teams is indicative of how smothering that defensive unit, led by Ronja Savolainen, can be.
Canada is equally as skilled defensively, with Jocelyn Laroque and Ella Shelton leading the way. Despite the blowout loss to the United States, Canada has still allowed just 2.0 goals to opposing teams, indicative of their ability to shut offenses down.
Both teams will be looking for a crucial win Thursday but Canada needs it more and holds the edge, slightly, on defense, with goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens being the difference.
Prediction: Canada narrowly edges Finland, 1-0
