Chris Houston Retires: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction
Carolina Panthers cornerback Chris Houston has retired less than two months after signing a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday.
The 30-year-old defensive back was vying for a backup job at corner, according to ESPN.com's David Newton.
Houston missed the entire 2014 season with a toe injury and most recently played for the Detroit Lions. During the 2013 season, he recorded two interceptions and 38 tackles. Just two years prior, he tied an NFL high with two interceptions returned for touchdowns while setting a league high with 225 interception return yards.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
“It was difficult because I came off a good year, and then I go into that (2013) year and all of a sudden little injuries to my toe and things started coming," Houston said on June 20, according to the Charlotte Observer's Joseph Person. "It was something I wasn’t able to get rid of throughout the season."
Over the course of his seven-year career with the Lions and Atlanta Falcons, the former second-round pick amassed 324 tackles, 13 interceptions, four forced fumbles and two defensive scores.
According to Spotrac, Houston's one-year deal with the Panthers was worth $875,000 with a $585,000 cap hit.
And considering he was just a camp body on a cheap prove-it deal, Houston's departure won't shake up the team's secondary in any major way.
Josh Norman and Bene Benwikere are tentatively slotted in as Carolina's starters on the outside, with veteran Charles Tillman and Melvin White providing reinforcements to stabilize a unit that ranked 11th in passing yards allowed (3,645) last season.
