Preview
The United States and Canada have once again looked like the two dominant sides in women's Olympic hockey.
Team USA scored five goals in each of its first three games in Milan. It has a 15-1 goal differential and received goal contributions from up and down the lineup.
More is expected out of Hilary Knight, Alex Carpenter and the top players in the rivalry game against Canada.
Knight needs one more goal to set a new American Olympic women's hockey scoring record.
Carpenter has a goal in each game of the group stage. She's been fantastic alongside Knight on the top American line.
Canada's found its attacking form as well with nine goals across two games. Its opening contest was postponed to Wednesday due to a virus outbreak inside the Finnish camp.
Although Canada has one group game left after Tuesday, the clash with Team USA is for the No. 1 seed in the knockout round.
The top seed comes with the benefit of avoiding the No. 3 seed in the semifinals. Both teams are expected to reach the final, but earning an easier path to the gold medal game does carry some weight.
Canada left its Monday game against Czechia with a major injury concern that could affect Tuesday's game and beyond. Marie-Philip Poulin did not play in the final two periods due to a lower-body injury.
No update has been provided on Poulin's status as of Monday night, but it's obvious that it would be a huge loss for the Canadians in their quest to repeat as gold medalist.
Canada has countless other scorers to rely on, including Sarah Fillier and Sarah Nurse, but Poulin is one of the best players in the world and her absence in a top matchup would be significant.
Canada can still without Poulin, but the Americans would at least have the edge on paper if she's unable to play.
Regardless of what happens on Tuesday, the two sides are expected to meet in another week for the gold medal.
Canada's won five of the seven Olympic gold medals since women's hockey was introduced in 1998, but the United States is the reigning world champion.
