This marks the second consecutive Olympics that Sadowski-Synnott is the top qualifier in the women's big air. She had a score of 176.5 four years ago, more than five points better than anyone else in the field.
The 2022 final started out looking like it was going to be Sadowski-Synnott's crowning moment with a high score of 93.25 after the first run, but Anna Gasser passed her with a score of 95.5 on the third run for a total of 185.50.
Sadowski-Synnott did leave Beijing with silver in the big air, as well as gold in the slopestyle. She failed to medal in the big air at the 2025 World Championships after posting the high score in qualifying.
The other two medalists from the 2022 Games, Gasser and Murase, are once again in the mix with Sadowski-Synnott as top contenders in the final on Monday.
Murase, who won bronze in Beijing, posted the second-best score during the first run of qualifying. She eased off the throttle after that knowing she would make it through.
Gasser had a slow start with the sixth-best score in the first run before rebounding in the third with a score of 84.75 to finish sixth overall.
Two potential spoilers in the mix are Mia Brookes and Seungeun Yu. Brookes, a 19-year-old from Great Britain, had to nail her final two runs after falling on the first run. She responded with the highest score of anyone in the second run (89.00) and a strong 78.00 in the third to make it through.
Yu, who just turned 18 on Jan. 28, had the best score in the third run (88.75) to bring her total up to 166.50. It was the third-highest score of the entire qualifying run, behind Sadowski-Synnott's first run and Brookes' second run.
Brookes won gold in the big air at the 2022 Junior World Championships. She most recently took the top spot in this event at a World Cup event in December competing against some of her fellow Olympians, including Momo Suzuki and Hanna Karrer.
The women's big air final will begin at 1:30 p.m. ET on Monday.
