Booking Seth Rollins' WWE Return from Injury After Missing Out on Royal Rumble
Although there were rumblings among WWE fans that Seth Rollins may return at the Royal Rumble on Jan. 31, he was ultimately not present at the event.
That isn't to say, however, that he can't eventually be revealed as the hooded figure who attacked Bron Breakker prior to the men's Rumble.
Rollins has been absent from WWE programming since being sidelined with a torn rotator cuff in October. In storyline, he was betrayed by Breakker and the rest of The Vision and was subsequently forced to relinquish the World Heavyweight Championship.
Regardless of whether he's cleared to compete by WrestleMania 42 or soon after, it's safe to assume he'll be firmly focused on exacting his revenge on the Heyman-led Vision and not necessarily regaining the world title or settling other scores, at least not right away.
This is how The Visionary's return from injury should be booked after missing out on the Royal Rumble.
Getting Cleared to Compete in Time for WrestleMania 42
1 of 5
When news first broke of Rollins suffering an injury during his Crown Jewel bout against Cody Rhodes, it was widely assumed he'd be missing WrestleMania 42 and would be out for a substantial amount of time.
That caused plans to shift significantly with Rollins being exiled from The Vision and having to give up the World Heavyweight Championship he held since SummerSlam. His road to recovery has been kept quiet, but Austin Theory did use Rollins' signature Stomp as a finisher a few times before unmasking and joining The Vision to remind viewers of the role Rollins once had in the group.
The last word from Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter is that Rollins is now expected to be back in time for 'Mania and will unsurprisingly face Bron Breakker.
That then begs the question of when Rollins should officially be brought back to television. Even if he isn't already cleared, enough time remains until WrestleMania weekend on April 18-19 for him to resurface a little later on in the build to the event.
In short, Rollins' return isn't imminent, but seeds are already being planted for how it's going to play out.
Being Revealed as Bron Breakker's Mystery Attacker
2 of 5
If Breakker wasn't going to win the men's Royal Rumble, then him being attacked during his entrance by a hooded figure and getting immediately eliminated from the Battle Royal by Oba Femi was the best way for him to lose.
WWE has relied a little too heavily on the hooded-figure trope in recent months on both Raw and SmackDown, but in this case, it creates a mystery that be carried out for a few weeks until Rollins is closer to being cleared.
Truthfully, there aren't many options who make sense to be revealed as the assailant other than The Visionary.
After narrowly losing to CM Punk on the first Raw of 2026, Breakker should theoretically be getting another shot at the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42. The only reason he's not is because he has a massive match lined up at the event with Rollins instead.
Rollins, or whoever is playing the hooded figure in the meantime, can continue to cost Breakker opportunities, such as qualifying for the men's Elimination Chamber match.
The reveal should be saved for sometime in March when they can make their match official for 'Mania.
Returning as a Tweener
3 of 5
It's imperative that Rollins be portrayed as a tweener, not as a full-fledged face or heel, when he returns to WWE TV.
The Visionary going heel at WrestleMania 41 was the best thing that could have happened to his stagnant character. Evidently, aligning with Paul Heyman was not.
Simply because he was betrayed by Bron Breakker and The Vision doesn't mean he has to be positioned as a babyface once he's back. He'd run the risk of becoming as boring and as stale as he was prior to The Vision coming together, largely relying on constant crowd singing to make himself marginally more interesting.
Jacob Fatu might be the only true tweener on the current roster and even he is more of a babyface than a heel. WWE has the opportunity to do something unique with Rollins by making him an anti-hero of sorts by having him feud with Breakker but not go back to embracing the audience.
Rollins is always in his element when he's in serious mode as opposed to acting like a parody of himself. That's the side of him fans need to see for his feud with Breakker.
Staying Away from CM Punk and Roman Reigns (For Now)
4 of 5
Rollins' injury couldn't have come at a worse time.
In addition to being the reigning world heavyweight champion and having all of Raw revolve around him for the better part of 2025, he still had unfinished business with CM Punk and Roman Reigns when he went down with the injury.
All signs pointed to him and Punk facing off at Saturday Night's Main Event that November and to him and Reigns finally getting their WrestleMania main event this year. Both bouts had to be scrapped.
As a result, it would be easy for WWE to seamlessly insert Rollins into the ongoing conflict between Punk and Reigns now that they've made their match official for WrestleMania with the World Heavyweight Championship—a title Rollins was never beaten for—on the line. By doing so, WWE would be repeating the exact bout they did in the Night 1 main event of The Show of Shows last year.
Rollins has to stay the course with Breakker en route to WrestleMania and revisit his rivalries with Reigns and Punk further down the line.
Elevating Breakker at WrestleMania
5 of 5
The point of forming The Vision should be to elevate Breakker and to an extent Bronson Reed. Rollins was the focal point for as long as he was the leader, but the endgame was always going to be Breakker turning on him when the time was right.
Breakker has taken on more of a leadership role in the absence of Rollins, but WWE has still struggled to capitalize on the hot momentum he had following his attack on the injured Rollins. He's also fallen short of winning the world heavyweight title and the men's Royal Rumble.
The second-generation star has to bounce back by beating his mentor when it matters most at WrestleMania.
Fans will rally behind the returning Rollins regardless of how he's portrayed, but that can't distract WWE from putting over the next big thing. A win for The Visionary would serve no purpose when the focus must be on the future.
Where Rollins would go post-WrestleMania is anyone's guess, but he's built up enough credibility that he won't lose anything in defeat. Breakker should be bound for the prestigious prize on the sooner side, while Rollins still has scores to settle with Punk and Reigns outside of the title picture.
