There was a lot of attention paid prior to the race on the downhill track at Stelvio because of its difficulty.

"Dark because of the shadow, its icy surface hard like Wolverine's claws," World Cup skiier Leo Ducros told The Athletic's Charlotte Harpur. "It's almost mystic. Nothing can prepare you for the Stelvio."

Von Allmen put together a fantastic run, all the more impressive considering how daunting the course is, to earn an Olympic gold medal in his first career appearance at the Winter Games.

The 24-year-old put himself on the map at the 2025 World Championships. He finished at the top of the podium in the individual event and won a second gold in the team competition.

Allmen's win marks the second consecutive Olympic gold for Switzerland in this event. Beat Feuz took the top spot four years ago in Beijing in his final marquee event before retiring in January 2023.

Giovanni Franzoni capped off a breakout year with a silver medal. He finished 21st in the downhill at the 2025 World Championships, but he started to hit his stride in December by finishing third in the super-G at the World Cup.

The 24-year-old Franzoni added a downhill win at Kitzbühel on Jan. 24, giving him a lot of positive momentum entering the Winter Games.

Paris, who will turn 37 in April, won his first Olympic medal in his fifth appearance at the Winter Games. His previous best finish in the downhill was fourth in 2014.
