DJ Lagway Responds to Ole Miss Rumors After Trinidad Chambliss Ruling Amid Baylor Buzz
Florida transfer quarterback DJ Lagway is making it clear that he is committed to Baylor despite reportedly being linked to Ole Miss.
Lagway responded to the rumors on Friday night, making it clear to On3Sports' Hayes Fawcett that he is "committed to Baylor":
That comes after CBS Sports' Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz reported Friday that Lagway has continued to speak with other schools including Ole Miss after verbally committing to Baylor.
ESPN's Pete Thamel, meanwhile, reported that Lagway "is planning to continue to take visits before officially committing," and that Ole Miss is "a program that has consistently expressed interest."
Hummer and Zenitz originally reported Thursday the "current expectation" was for Lagway to join Baylor, where the Bears are looking for a successor to redshirt senior quarterback Sawyer Robertson.
Lagway has also reportedly visited Florida State and Virginia since announcing his decision to transfer from Florida.
The updated report comes shortly after the NCAA announced Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss had been denied a sixth year of college eligibility.
ESPN's Mark Schlabach and Pete Thamel had previously reported that Chambliss and Ole Miss had already reached an NIL deal for the 2026 season, pending the NCAA's granting of his eligibility waiver.
Chambliss' waiver bid involves being granted a medical redshirt year for respiratory issues he dealt with during his sophomore season at DI Ferris State, according to Thamel.
Ole Miss will have the opportunity to appeal the decision, per Thamel. Chambliss' attorney, Tom Mars, also told Thamel there was "now an opportunity to move this case to a level playing field where Trinidad's rights will be determined by the Mississippi judiciary."
The NCAA's denial of Chambliss' waiver came shortly after he and Ole Miss came short of a trip to the national championship game with a 31-27 loss to Miami in the Thursday night Fiesta Bowl.
If Chambliss is unable to secure another year of eligibility through an Ole Miss appeal or a legal case, the Rebels will need to find another quarterback for their first full year under head coach Pete Golding.
Lagway came to Florida ranked only behind Julian Sayin as one of the top quarterbacks in 2024 recruiting class in 247Sports' composite rankings. After struggling with injuries during the summer leading up to his sophomore season, however, he led Florida to a 4-8 record and led the SEC with 14 interceptions in 12 games.
Given his comments on Friday night, it appears as though Lagway intends to play for the Bears next season. Now, Baylor will hope to see him live up to the potential he showed early in his college career with a full offseason and a healthier junior campaign.
