12 Times Golf Went YOLO

Laura DeptaAug 12, 2015

It's PGA Championship week, so why not talk a little golf?

Golf, generally regarded as one of the more polite, reserved sports, can be surprisingly unruly at times. James Hahn did a "Gangnam Style" dance after sinking a big putt. And you know what? Good for him. You only live once, right?

There are more unusual golf stories out there than you think, and here are 12 of them. Golfers arguing, celebrating, swearing with reckless abandon—these are their craziest YOLO moments.

Andrew Orischak Locks Down a Prom Date

1 of 12

Holly Sonders is a former Michigan State golfer and current reporter for Fox Sports. Andrew Orischak is a 16-year-old amateur who gets to take her to his high school prom.

Sonders told Golf Digest it started as a joke during the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship that turned real. She said, "Andrew himself asked if I'd be his prom date if he won the entire championship, a deal I accepted with a smile. I liked the kid's confidence."

Orischak let a late lead slip away and lost the tournament, but Sonders told him she'd still be his date. One thing is for sure: Orischak is so going to be the coolest kid at the prom.

Twitter Wars

2 of 12

Keegan Bradley and Miguel Angel Jimenez got into it on the golf course recently (more on that later), but not all arguments are limited to the course. In June, Brendan Steele and Will Wilcox engaged in Twitter warfare over an incredibly important topic—on-course music.

Wilcox is apparently a Drake fan, and Steele apparently is not. Riveting stuff. These guys don't care if their little beef looks silly. They will be heard!

Tiger Woods' Old Caddie Basks in the Spotlight

3 of 12

Steve Williams caddied for Tiger Woods during 13 of his 14 major championships. After Woods relieved him of his services in 2011, Williams told Golf.com he hasn't really heard from his former boss since then. Williams said, "It's disappointing. I caddied for the guy for 13 years, put my heart and soul into it, and there's been no correspondence at all."

So needless to say, when Williams' newest employer, Adam Scott, won the World Golf Championship at Firestone, the caddie was elated. He was so elated, in fact, he relished the significant attention Scott's win afforded him. Crowds cheered for him, he gave a long media interview and he even jabbed at Woods by calling the victory his "best win."

Some thought Williams took the celebration a little too far, but hey, YOLO.

Rickie Fowler Fires Up the Crowd

4 of 12

Golf is really more of a two-finger clap sport than a raucous, amped-up affair. But for Rickie Fowler? Not so much. At the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open, he had some fun on the 16th hole and raised his arms to incite crowd noise. Happy Gilmore didn't care about golf norms, and on that day, Fowler didn't either.

Rory and the Kilt

5 of 12

Win the Ryder Cup, celebrate in a wig and kilt. Makes sense. After the European team defeated the Americans in 2014, Irishman Rory McIlroy partied in costume and apparently with some adult bevvies. Because why not?

Tiger Woods and All the Profanities

6 of 12

What would this list be without Tiger Woods? The man has been known to lose his temper from time to time, and that includes golf course profanities. (Warning: Links contain NSFW language.)

This year's Masters was no exception, as Woods vented frustration with words he probably wouldn't want his kids to hear him say.

Keegan Bradley and Miguel Angel Jimenez Argue

7 of 12

When was the last time you saw a verbal altercation on the golf course? It doesn't happen often, but when it does, things can get heated.

Keegan Bradley and Miguel Angel Jimenez got into it right out in the open at the WGC Match Play Championship, and it looked for a moment like they might come to blows. The catalyst was a tee shot Bradley sailed left. As he attempted to determine where the ball should be dropped, Jimenez interjected with his own opinion.

Bradley and his caddie did not take it well. Perhaps it was because they were eliminated from contention, but whatever the reason, caution was in the wind with this one.

Garcia Walks off the Course

8 of 12

This one goes back a few years, but it's basically the 2000 equivalent of the Keegan Bradley-Miguel Angel Jimenez argument.

Sergio Garcia was just 20 years old when an amateur blew up at him on the course at Montecastillo in Spain.

Garcia told the Herald at the time, "He came up short of the green, then accused me of giving him the wrong yardage. He started saying rude words to me, that I hadn't looked after my amateur partners. Then he came towards me with his hand raised saying that he was going to hit me."

Garcia walked off the course. Ain't nobody got time for that.

John Daly, Pretty Much All of the Time

9 of 12

Based on his bold pant choices over the years, it's clear John Daly does what he wants. His colorful collection has turned a lot of heads, and just recently, he donned New York Yankees pants while puffing on a cigarette at St. Andrews. Zero effs given.

Putting 'The P in PGA'

10 of 12

The tale of the Norwegian golf pooper is surely a (very gross) YOLO golf moment, but it brings up another point.

Kevin Na once talked to Steve Rushin of Golf Digest about taking a leak on the course: "I guarantee you, everyone has a story. We've all gone out and found a tree or a bush at some point."

Rushin investigated further and found this practice is, indeed, rather common in emergency situations. Hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go.

Robert Allenby Fires His Caddy Mid-Round

11 of 12

Firing a caddie in the middle of a tournament qualifies as unusual, I'd say.

Robert Allenby's kidnapping story was odd enough, and he hit the news again when he fired his caddie, Mick Middlemo, during the RBC Canadian Open.

According to Jason Logan of scoregolf.com, a disagreement over which club to use started the whole thing. In a nutshell—Middlemo suggested an 8-iron, Allenby wanted a 7-iron, Middlemo won the argument and Allenby tanked the hole.

Logan reported Allenby said, "And he just lost the plot at me. He just told me I could go eff myself."

Allenby fired him on the spot, but Middlemo also had some cojones, amirite?

James Hahn's Victory Dance

12 of 12

Victory dances are fairly typical in sports but not so common in golf specifically.

Don't tell that to James Hahn. After he sunk a 20-foot putt for birdie at TPC Scottsdale in 2013, Hahn busted out a "Gangnam Style" dance that later, obviously, swept the Internet.

You go, James. Dance like no one is watching.
