It's no surprise that Serrano is a massive favorite over Tellez. Not only is Serrano one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, but Tellez is taking on the massive challenge under less-than-ideal circumstances.
Serrano was originally supposed to fight Erika Cruz. However, Cruz was forced off the card due to an atypical VADA test result, opening the door for Tellez.
Unfortunately, cutting weight was an issue for Tellez on two-weeks' notice. She was unable to make the championship weight of 126 so she is not eligible to actually take Serrano's titles even if she wins.
Obviously, pulling off a stunning upset would likely lead to another opportunity to take the fight with a full camp, make weight and become the champion.
Making matters potentially worse for Tellez is that this fight will be fought in 12 three-minute rounds. Serrano has pushed for women's title fights to be fought under the same conditions as the men. Women's fights have traditionally been fought with two-minute rounds.
Serrano was disappointed by the late opponent change, but continued to focus on the opportunity to fight in front of a Puerto Rican crowd.
"I'm disappointed the original fight couldn't move forward, but my priority has always been respect for the sport," Serrano said in a statement. "Reina Tellez is a tough opponent who's earned this opportunity, and I am up for the challenge. Fighting at home in Puerto Rico, defending my world titles, and continuing to push women's boxing forward under equal rules means everything to me."
This is a massive step up in competition for Tellez. She's only 22 so she has youth on her side, however, much of her experience thus far has been against fighters with records close to .500.
Throw in the fact that she'll be fighting longer rounds against a fantastic pressure fighter in Serrano and it becomes harder to see this one going the distance.
Serrano should be amped for this fight and if she turns up the heat in three minute rounds she should be able to overwhelm the less experienced Tellez.
