How Much Lane Kiffin Earned in Contract Bonuses After Ole Miss' CFP Run Ends with Fiesta Bowl Loss
The contract bonuses will no longer be coming for LSU head coach Lane Kiffin in relation to Ole Miss' College Football Playoff run.
The Ole Miss Rebels were eliminated from the College Football Playoff on Thursday night with a 31-27 loss to the Miami Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl. Had the Rebels won, Kiffin, who coached Ole Miss from 2020-25, would have earned a $250,000 bonus.
With Ole Miss' title hopes having come to an end, here's a breakdown of the bonus money Kiffin earned during the team's playoff run:
- Make College Football Playoff: $150,000
- Make CFP Quarterfinal: $250,000
- Make CFP Semifinal: $500,000
Had Ole Miss won a national title, Kiffin would have taken home a $1 million bonus (h/t Grant Grubbs of On3.com).
LSU agreed to pay Kiffin the same CFP bonus he would have received from the Rebels as part of the seven-year contract he signed with the Tigers, via ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.
Kiffin served as coach of Ole Miss from 2020-25, including its 11-1 start to this season. He said that he wanted to continue patrolling the sidelines for the Rebels' playoff appearance during his announcement that he was accepting the LSU job.
Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter later explained that Kiffin was aware he wouldn't be able to do so if he joined the Tigers.
"There's been a lot of things he's said publicly that I'm not sure are totally accurate," Carter said during an appearance on SuperTalk Mississippi, via Yahoo Sports' Nick Bromberg. "I think that both coach and his representation knew several weeks ago that coaching in the playoffs was not going to be an option if he was not the Ole Miss head coach."
Former defensive coordinator Pete Golding has operated as the Rebels' full-time head coach following Kiffin's exit, helping them take down Tulane in the first round of the CFP before defeating Georgia on Thursday.
Kiffin's current contract with LSU contains similar bonuses if he's able to lead the Tigers on a playoff run. He'd receive $1 million for winning the SEC Championship Game, $750,000 for a first-round CFP appearance and $3 million for a national championship (via Rittenberg).
