Nick Bonino to Penguins: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction
After signing forward Eric Fehr, the Pittsburgh Penguins continued to reshape their roster Tuesday by trading forward Brandon Sutter and a conditional 2016 third-round pick to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forward Nick Bonino, defenseman Adam Clendening and a 2016 second-round pick.
The deal was officially announced on NHL.com.
""The analytics are very strong on both Nick Bonino and Eric Fehr in all the aspects of what we look for in analytics," Penguins GM Jim Rutherford said, Fehr is comfortable as a two position player. He could definitely jump up to the top-6 if the situation presented itself. Bonino’s strongest position is center. That would be his preference."

Rutherford was also quick to praise Clendening, saying "He is still a young guy. There is a good upside to him."
Canucks general manager Jim Benning was equally effusive in his praise of Sutter, calling the forward a "foundation piece" for the organization.
"This moves makes our team deeper and gives us a better chance to compete in our division and conference," Benning said. The general manager also noted he was happy with his team as it stood now.
The move helps the Pens from a financial standpoint, according to Justin Bourne of theScore:
Sutter had been with the Penguins since they acquired him from the Carolina Hurricanes in 2012. He is coming off a career-best 21-goal season but is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season, according to NHL Numbers.
Bonino, on the other hand, is signed for two more seasons at a cap hit of just $1.9 million, according to NHL Numbers. He put up 15 goals and 39 points last season for Vancouver after a career year with the Anaheim Ducks in 2013-14 that saw him post 22 goals and 49 points.
Pittsburgh also receives a promising 22-year-old blueliner in Clendening, who has appeared in 21 NHL games since being selected in the second round of the 2011 NHL draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.
When taking the signing of Fehr into account, Sean Gentille of Sporting News believes that Pittsburgh improved significantly on Tuesday:
Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford hasn't been shy about wheeling and dealing this offseason, as he previously acquired high-scoring forward Phil Kessel from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Pittsburgh was a severe disappointment last season, as it was bounced in the first round of the playoffs, but 2015-16 seems far more promising thanks to the additions of Kessel, Fehr and Bonino.
Kessel promises to be a great trigger man for either Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, while Fehr and Bonino give the Pens the center depth they have desperately needed for quite some time.
Now that some of the burden has been taken off Crosby and Malkin, it wouldn't be at all surprising if they both have career years in 2015-16.
