Triple H Talks Decision to Have John Cena Tap Out in Last Match of Historic WWE Career
The WWE Universe may not have been satisfied with the finish to John Cena's final in-ring appearance, but he and Triple H thought losing to Gunther was "right for the business."
"John has said the right thing his entire career, that is about leaving this place better than you found it," Triple H said on the Saturday Night's Main Event post-show (via Bryan Rose of F4WOnline). "There's no way for people to understand that in the moment. But you do what is right for the business, you do what is right for this industry, John has done that his entire career, and I'm going to do that my entire career. I will do what I believe is right for this business, which it is what it is. I understand that's tough for people to understand."
Cena closed his legendary career with a defeat, tapping out in Gunther's sleeper hold. The 17-time world champion had successfully fought out of the submission hold earlier in the match but eventually ran out of gas.
The shock from a lot of fans was evident as soon as the bell rang. A hush fell over Capital One Arena, and you lost count of the "surrender cobras" on display.
As much as Saturday Night's Main Event was promoted as Cena's farewell show, it was also about elevating Gunther.
The 38-year-old may no longer have the World Heavyweight Championship, but he has beaten both Cena and Goldberg in their retirement matches only months apart. That's an impressive distinction to claim.
A lot of casual observers and lapsed fans tuned in Saturday given the historical significance. Those viewers may not have been familiar with Gunther's body of work, but the outcome of the main event ensured they know "The Ring General" now.
